Chapter 4: The Altar Abandoned

When Claire stepped back into the chapel, the congregation fell into an absolute, breathless silence.
James stood at the foot of the chancel, his tie loosened, his face glistening with cold sweat. Eleanor stood beside him, clutching her gold evening purse like a weapon.
""Claire, thank God,"" James began, rushing forward with a rehearsed, sorrowful expression. ""I can explain everything. Sarah was mentally unstable... she fabricated those allegations to extort my family—""
Claire raised her hand. The gesture was so sharp, so commanding, that James stopped dead in his tracks three feet away.
""Do not speak her name with that lying mouth, James,"" Claire said, her voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling of the church.
She turned to face the two hundred guests: judges, district attorneys, civic leaders, and her own extended family.
""There will be no wedding today,"" Claire announced with unshakeable poise. ""Mr. James Miller has omitted a legal marriage, two biological children, and the active abandonment of a dying spouse in Charleston. Furthermore, his firm has engaged in fraudulent asset concealment to secure my family's venture capital.""
Gasping broke out across the chapel. Several prominent judges in the front pews stood up, looking at James with cold disgust.
""You ungrateful bitch!"" Eleanor shrieked, lunging toward Claire with her hands raised. ""You have ruined my son's career in front of this entire city!""
Before Eleanor could reach Claire, Claire’s older brother, Thomas Vance, stepped between them, his six-foot-three frame an immovable wall.
""Step back, Eleanor,"" Thomas warned, his voice low and dangerous. ""If you take another step toward my sister or those children, I will have the county sheriff escort you straight to the Chatham County jail.""
Claire did not look back.

Holding Sophie and Toby tightly by the hands, she walked down the red carpet aisle, past the flower arrangements, past the staring society guests, and out through the heavy mahogany doors into the golden Georgia afternoon.
