Chapter 13: An Unbroken Custody

On August 18, the Chatham County Family Court held a final, celebratory hearing.

Judge Evelyn Harrison entered the courtroom wearing her judicial robes, smiling warmly at the family gathered before her.

Claire sat at the counsel table, wearing a cream linen suit. Beside her sat Sophie, now eight years old, wearing a bright yellow sundress, and Toby, now seven, sitting tall in a blue blazer.

""In the matter of Sophie Miller and Toby Miller,"" Judge Harrison read from the golden-sealed decree. ""This court finds that Claire Evelyn Vance has provided extraordinary, loving, and permanent parental care. The court hereby grants **Permanent Sole Legal and Physical Guardianship and Final Adoption** to Claire Vance.""

The judge banged her wooden gavel with a firm, joyful crack.

Sophie and Toby cheered, throwing their arms around Claire’s waist.

Marcus Cole and Thomas Vance stood in the gallery, clapping with broad, triumphant smiles.

Judge Harrison stepped down from the bench, handing Sophie and Toby their new, certified birth certificates.

""You have a magnificent mother, children,"" Judge Harrison said gently.
