Chapter 15: The Whole Garden

Three years after the day at St. Jude’s Chapel, the coastal orchard on Tybee Island was alive with music, laughter, and the rich scent of ripe summer peaches.

A long, hand-hewn cedar harvest table was set beneath the blooming trees, covered with linen cloths, platters of roasted local seafood, sweet corn, bowls of fresh garden salads, and carafes of iced mint tea.

Dozens of friends were gathered: pediatric nurses from the oncology wing, teachers from Sophie and Toby’s school, Marcus Cole, and Thomas Vance with his family.

Sophie, now ten years old and thriving as a young artist, was setting up an outdoor easel to paint the ocean sunset. Toby, now nine, was racing through the clover meadow with their golden retriever, his laughter echoing across the salt marsh.

Claire stood on the veranda, wearing a simple white linen sundress, her hair flowing naturally in the sea breeze, holding a glass of iced peach cider.

She looked down at her hands—hands that had let go of a false marriage, hands that had taken the trembling fingers of two abandoned children, hands that had built a true sanctuary out of truth.

Sophie ran up the wooden steps, throwing her arms around Claire’s waist, looking up with bright, fearless hazel eyes.

""Mommy! Look at the painting! I painted all three of us on the beach!""

Claire knelt down, admiring the vibrant colors, kissing Sophie’s freckled temple.

""It’s the most beautiful thing in the world, sweetheart,"" Claire whispered.

There were no gilded lies here. There were no false vows, no hidden secrets, no debts of vanity.

There was only an open sea, an unbroken home, and a family rooted forever in the rich, unshakeable soil of love and truth.
