Chapter 14: The Message Answered

In October, on the anniversary of the wedding that never was, Claire, Sophie, and Toby drove to Charleston, South Carolina.
They walked through the quiet, sun-dappled grounds of Magnolia Cemetery, stopping before a modest granite headstone surrounded by blooming white hydrangeas.
The inscription read:
*SARAH MILLER — A MOTHER WHOSE LOVE DEFIED THE STORM.*
Sophie laid a bouquet of fresh peach blossoms from Tybee Island against the stone. Toby placed a smooth white sea-glass stone he had found on the beach.
Claire knelt beside the children, resting her hand against the cool granite.
""We did it, Sarah,"" Claire whispered into the gentle autumn breeze. ""They are safe. They are loved. They are whole. Your message was heard.""
Sophie looked up at the sky, where the afternoon clouds parted to reveal a warm shaft of golden sunlight streaming over the oaks.
""She hears you, Mommy,"" Sophie smiled softly.
