Chapter 7: The Master’s Return

Arthur Sterling arrived at the shipyard on a golden afternoon in late October.

The sugar maples along the river bluffs were ablaze in crimson and amber, their leaves drifting down over the brick courtyard where shipwrights were planing long white-oak planks for the schooner’s deck.

Arthur walked into the main foundry hall, taking off his cashmere coat, his eyes widening in awe as he looked at the massive wooden hull rising forty feet into the rafters.

Elena was standing on a timber staging scaffold, holding a pneumatic caulking mallet, driving seasoned cotton into the oak seams.

She looked down, saw Arthur, and climbed down the wooden ladder with fluid, effortless grace.

""Arthur,"" Elena smiled, wiping cedar dust from her cheek with a cotton rag.

Arthur looked at her—at her strong, calloused hands, her clear, radiant eyes, and the deep, unshakeable peace that surrounded her posture.

""You look like your grandfather, Elena,"" Arthur said softly, his voice thick with emotion. ""He had that same look whenever he finished framing a hull.""

He handed her the leather portfolio.

""The federal court has finalized the restitution structure,"" Arthur explained. ""The entire twenty-four-million-dollar surplus recovered from Julian’s seized estates has been transferred into *The Castile Maritime & Ecological Trust* under your sole executive trusteeship.""

Elena looked at the documents, then looked out the high arched windows toward the sparkling blue waters of the Hudson River.

""We aren't keeping a single dollar for private capital, Arthur,"" Elena said firmly.

""I expected nothing less, my dear,"" Arthur smiled. ""What is the directive?""

""We are turning this shipyard into a permanent regional vocational academy for clean-energy maritime engineering,"" Elena replied. ""Every displaced worker and apprentice from the valley will have free tuition, fair wages, and a stake in the cooperative.""
