Chapter 3: The Departure from Park Avenue

By midnight, the storm over Manhattan had turned into a torrential downpour, washing the city streets clean under the orange glare of halogen lamps.

Elena stood in the master dressing room of the duplex penthouse on Park Avenue.

She did not touch the designer jewelry cases, the custom fur coats, or the modern art installations Julian had purchased to impress prospective hedge-fund investors.

She packed two modest leather duffel bags: her mother’s hand-written recipe journals, her father’s antique brass drafting compass, three sets of heavy wool sweaters, and her personal legal archives.

She walked out onto the private terrace overlooking Central Park.

The rain beat steadily against the stone balustrade. Down below, the line of luxury limousines had vanished, replaced by the yellow headlights of ordinary city taxis splashing through puddles.

Her phone vibrated in her coat pocket. It was an encrypted voice message from Charlotte Sterling:

*""You think you won because you humiliated us, Elena? Julian’s defense attorneys will tie this up in appellate probate for ten years. You will never see a single dollar of the trust capital.""*

Elena listened to the message, smiled faintly, and deleted the recording.

She dropped the electronic penthouse keycard onto the glass coffee table in the foyer, walked out the front door, and took the service elevator down to the underground parking bay where an old, green Land Rover was waiting.

She turned the ignition key. The diesel engine rumbled to life with a deep, steady heartbeat.

Elena shifted into gear and drove out into the rainy night, pointing the headlights north toward the Hudson Valley.
