Chapter 1: The Shattered Glass

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Athenaeum in Manhattan glittered beneath six tiers of bohemian crystal chandeliers. The air was thick with the scent of white calla lilies, vintage Dom Pérignon, and the subtle, sharp ozone of two hundred press flashbulbs.

Standing beneath the gilded neoclassical archway, Arthur Sterling—senior managing partner of Sterling, Vance & Caldwell—leaned toward Elena Castile. His bespoke tuxedo was impeccable, his silver hair swept back with aristocratic precision.

""Everyone's watching, Elena,"" Arthur murmured, his low baritone barely carrying over the waltz played by the philharmonic strings.

Elena adjusted the diamond tennis bracelet on her left wrist. Her black V-neck silk crepe gown pooled around her feet like midnight water, a striking contrast to the sea of pastel chiffons across the room.

""Let them,"" Elena replied, her voice smooth and unhurried.

Twenty feet away on the polished marble floor, Julian Castile had his arm wrapped possessively around Charlotte Sterling—Arthur’s estranged niece. Charlotte wore a dramatic crimson ballgown, her manicured hand resting over Julian’s lapel. Julian was laughing, his charming, practiced smile gleaming for the cameras as he raised a crystal flute to toast his pending appointment as chairman of Caldwell Meridian Energy.

A server stepped forward with a silver tray. Julian turned carelessly, his elbow catching a crystal flute of vintage champagne.

The glass plummeted to the floor, shattering in an explosive cascade of sparkling foam and crystal shards that cracked like a gunshot across the quiet ballroom.

The orchestra stumbled to a halt. The laughter died.

Through the parting crowd, Elena walked forward. Her black satin heels made no sound on the wet marble. She stopped three paces from Julian and reached into her black leather clutch, pulling out an off-white parchment document bound with dark blue silk tape.

Julian’s smile tightened into a condescending mask. ""Elena, darling. If you wanted to join the toast, you only had to ask.""

Elena did not speak. She handed him the papers.

Julian opened the ribbon, his eyes darting across the embossed seal of the Supreme Court of New York.

His handsome face lost every drop of color.

""Elena..."" Julian gasped, his breath catching in his throat. ""You... you filed?""

""Eleven weeks ago,"" Elena said with cold, tranquil precision.

""This isn't final,"" Julian snapped, his voice trembling with sudden, volatile desperation as cameras clicked rapidly in the background. ""The marital assets are tied to the Caldwell Meridian merger! You can't unilaterally dissolve the joint holding structure!""

""It is final, Julian,"" Elena replied.

Arthur Sterling stepped up beside Elena, his presence towering over the younger man.

""Perhaps we should discuss Caldwell Meridian, Julian,"" Arthur said sternly.

Julian’s eyes darted frantically. ""Is there a problem, Arthur?""

May you like

""There are several,"" Arthur replied, his voice dropping like an iron portcullis. ""And the first is that you no longer hold a single share of voting equity.""
