Chapter 13: The Blacksmith's Band

That evening, as the celebratory bonfire crackled in the shipyard courtyard and acoustic fiddles played lively mountain reels by the river, David led Elena into the quiet, dark interior of the blacksmith shop.
A single oil lamp was burning on the timber workbench beside the cold forge.
David reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, hand-carved box made of Adirondack white pine.
He placed it into Elena’s hands.
Elena opened the lid.
Inside lay a simple, elegant ring hand-forged from Damascus iron, its surface displaying delicate, flowing water-like grain patterns, inlaid with a microscopic ribbon of native river copper.
""I forged this from an iron fastener salvaged from the original 1924 frame of the *Pioneer*,"" David said softly, his deep hazel eyes filled with quiet, absolute devotion. ""It survived a century in the deep water without snapping.""
He took her hand in his, his voice steady and low.
""I don't have corporate empires or society galas to give you, Elena. But I give you my hands, my work, and my promise to stand beside you through every storm until my breath is done.""
Elena looked down at the ring, then looked up into the honest, loving face of the man who had walked with her through the restoration of her life.
Her heart was completely, unshakeably full.

""Yes, David,"" Elena whispered, tears of pure peace shining on her cheeks. ""Always yes.""
