Chapter 2: The Sovereign Ledger

A collective intake of breath swept through the ballroom.
Charlotte stepped forward, the red satin of her dress rustling aggressively. ""Uncle Arthur, what is the meaning of this? Julian secured the sovereign pipeline financing from the Gulf consortium! He is the designated CEO of the merged holding company!""
Arthur did not look at his niece. He turned his eyes directly onto Julian.
""The Gulf consortium did not negotiate with you, Julian,"" Arthur said. ""They negotiated with Castile Oceanographic & Energy Trust—a private sovereign entity founded by Elena’s grandfather sixty years ago. You were merely an authorized signatory on the corporate shell.""
Arthur gestured toward the grand entrance where four federal marshals in dark wool coats were walking past the private security guards, flanked by Special Agent Vance of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
""As of 4:00 PM today,"" Agent Vance announced, his voice echoing cleanly off the marble pillars, ""a federal freezing injunction has been executed on all domestic accounts associated with Meridian Capital. Julian Castile, you are required to surrender your corporate keys, communication devices, and passport immediately.""
Julian dropped the blue-ribboned document onto the floor among the wet champagne shards.
""Elena!"" Julian pleaded, his composure disintegrating into frantic panic as the marshals stepped onto the dance floor. ""Seven years! We built this network together! You can't let them arrest me at the annual charity gala!""
Elena looked into his eyes—not with rage, not with triumphant malice, but with the vast, quiet grief of someone looking at a hollow monument that had finally collapsed under its own weight.
""You didn't build a network, Julian,"" Elena said softly. ""You built a cage of forged signatures and offshore shell accounts to fund your private jet fleet while cutting safety pensions for six hundred pipeline technicians in West Virginia.""

She turned her back on him, stepping through the parting crowd with Arthur Sterling at her side, leaving Julian standing in the center of the flashing cameras as the steel handcuffs clicked over his wrists.
