Chapter 8

Night fell heavily over the estate, casting deep, ink-black shadows across the sprawling gardens and the grand facade of the mansion. Inside her private suite on the second floor, Victoria paced furiously across the plush carpet. Her phone had been disconnected from the estate’s primary network, and her personal accounts were already frozen pending the forensic audit. She was completely isolated, cut off from the levers of power she had manipulated for so long. Yet, instead of surrendering, her mind raced with frantic, desperate strategies to salvage her crumbling empire.

Downstairs in the study, Julian and Eleanor sat together in quiet solidarity. The fire crackled softly, casting a warm, flickering light over their faces. Eleanor looked up from her book, her expression troubled by the heavy atmosphere hanging over the house.

"She won't go quietly, Julian," Eleanor warned softly, breaking the silence. "Victoria has always been at her most dangerous when she is cornered. She has allies outside the family—investors and creditors who know nothing of her domestic tyranny."

"Let them come," Julian replied, setting his teacup down on the mahogany table. "The financial records are airtight, Mom. The authorities are already reviewing the offshore accounts she set up in the Cayman Islands. By morning, her external allies will realize she is a sinking ship and abandon her just like the board did."

"It's not just about money, son," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a grave whisper. "People like Victoria measure their self-worth entirely by dominance. When you take away their power, they often strike out in ways that defy rational self-preservation."

As if echoing Eleanor’s warning, a sharp knock echoed at the heavy study door. Marcus, the head of security, stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his face grim and tense.

"Mr. Vance, we have a situation at the perimeter gates," Marcus reported, his voice low and professional. "A courier just dropped off a sealed legal notice addressed to you and Mrs. Vance. It’s an emergency injunction filed by an independent creditors' coalition claiming immediate ownership rights to the estate's liquid assets."

Julian stood up instantly, his eyes narrowing. "On what grounds? The estate trust was cleared of all external debt three years ago."

"They claim Victoria used her personal corporate shares as collateral for a private bridge loan last week—right before the board suspended her," Marcus explained, handing over a thick envelope. "If that loan defaults tomorrow morning, the creditors can legally seize the mansion and its contents before the audit concludes."

A cold realization washed over Julian. Victoria had executed a scorched-earth maneuver, willing to burn the entire estate to the ground rather than let him win.
