Chapter 10

The federal marshals moved up the grand staircase with quiet, practiced efficiency, their footsteps echoing sharply against the pristine white marble floor. Victoria stood paralyzed on the steps, her sparkling beige evening gown catching the harsh, fluorescent lights that the authorities had switched on, banishing the comforting shadows of the grand hall. For the first time in her life, the armor of arrogance and wealth she had meticulously constructed began to flake away, exposing the hollow fear underneath.

"Victoria Vance, you are named in a federal warrant for corporate fraud, asset falsification, and interstate financial conspiracy," the lead marshal stated, his voice devoid of emotion as he extended the official documents toward her. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

Julian watched from the base of the stairs, his hands resting quietly in the pockets of his dark blue suit. He felt no surge of triumph, only a profound, heavy exhaustion. The conflict had drained the life out of the mansion, leaving behind the chilling reality of what greed could do to a family. Eleanor stepped out from the hallway, leaning on her cane, her eyes filled with sorrow as she witnessed the final, tragic chapter of Victoria’s reign.

"Victoria," Eleanor called out softly, her voice carrying a deep, maternal resonance that cut through the sterile atmosphere of the hall. "It didn't have to end this way. You had a home here, but you chose to rule a prison instead."

Victoria turned her head slowly, her eyes flashing with a final, desperate flicker of defiance. "You never accepted me, Eleanor! To you and your precious family, I was always an outsider—just a corporate climber wearing your family crest! I had to take control, or I would have been crushed by your traditions!"

"You weren't crushed by our traditions, Victoria; you were consumed by your own ambition," Julian said firmly, stepping forward to stand beside his mother. "You treated human lives like financial assets, and now the balance sheet has come due."

The marshals gently placed cold steel cuffs around Victoria’s wrists. The metallic click echoed sharply against the marble walls, shattering the illusion of royalty she had maintained for decades. As they escorted her down the grand staircase, her diamond necklace glittered ironically against her collarbone—a sparkling symbol of a wealth built on deception and ruin. She kept her chin held high, refusing to look at the staff gathered quietly at the edge of the hall to witness her fall. The grand hall felt vast, cold, and desperately empty as the heavy front doors opened to let the damp night air sweep inside, washing away the toxic legacy that had poisoned the Vance estate for far too long.
