Chapter 2

Victoria Vance did not flinch as her husband glared down at her from across the polished marble floor. Her fingers brushed the edge of her diamond necklace, the brilliant stones catching the chandelier light and scattering tiny rainbows across her collarbone. She had ruled this household with an iron fist disguised in velvet, believing firmly that power belonged to those who seized it without hesitation. The elderly matriarch, Eleanor Vance, leaned weakly against Julian’s shoulder, her breath coming in shallow, tremulous gasps. Eleanor had built this empire alongside her late husband, brick by brick, but in her old age, she had allowed Victoria to consolidate control over the estate's finances and staff. Now, that oversight had come back to haunt them all.
"Power is not inherited, Julian," Victoria said, her voice smooth and chillingly composed as she looked down her nose at the two of them. "It is maintained through absolute authority. If she cannot even keep her balance in this house, she has no business holding court."
Julian’s chest rose and fell beneath his dark blue suit jacket. He remembered the quiet kindness his mother had shown him when he was a boy, and seeing her humiliated on the cold floor stoked a furnace of rage inside him. Yet, he kept his voice remarkably steady, refusing to give Victoria the satisfaction of a screaming match. He guided Eleanor toward the grand staircase, leaving Victoria alone in her massive wooden chair at the center of the hall.
"Take her to her chambers," Victoria commanded the trembling maid, who scrambled to her feet and rushed to assist the elderly woman.
Julian stopped halfway up the first few marble steps. He turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You have gone too far this time, Victoria," he said quietly. "You treat this family like a corporation and everyone else as hostile takeover targets."

Victoria raised an eyebrow, a faint, mocking smile touching the corners of her lips. "Someone has to keep this family solvent, Julian. Your sentimental attachments are a liability."
The tension in the grand hall thickened until it felt almost palpable. Julian knew that arguing with logic or emotion was entirely useless with Victoria; she only respected leverage and strength. As Eleanor leaned heavily on the maid, whispering reassuring words to calm the girl's nerves, Julian made a silent vow. The throne Victoria clung to so desperately was built on the alienation of everyone who truly loved her, and he was about to prove that a throne resting on nothing but ice would eventually melt under the right kind of pressure.
