Chapter 4

The polished glass table of the corporate boardroom reflected the gray morning light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Vance Tower. Executives and board members sat in hushed anticipation as Victoria entered the room, impeccably dressed in a tailored white pantsuit, her signature diamond necklace gleaming against her throat. She carried herself with absolute assurance, taking her seat at the head of the table with the practiced grace of a queen surveying her domain. She expected a routine quarterly review, a rubber-stamping of her latest corporate restructuring plans.

Instead, Julian sat diagonally across from her, flanked by corporate legal counsel and two senior auditors. He did not look at her as she settled into her chair; instead, he methodically opened a leather portfolio and began aligning his documents with surgical precision.

"Good morning, members of the board," Victoria began, her voice carrying a crisp, authoritative ring that commanded instant attention. "Before we review the financials, I want to formally propose the consolidation of our subsidiary holdings under my direct administrative oversight."

"That proposal is out of order, Victoria," Julian said calmly, cutting across her speech without raising his voice.

Victoria paused, her sharp blue eyes narrowing as she fixed them on her husband. "Excuse me? Julian, I hold the controlling proxy votes. Nothing on this agenda moves forward without my explicit approval."

"Not anymore," Julian replied smoothly. He slid a certified document across the sleek glass surface toward her. "According to Section 4 of the Vance Family Trust, any trustee found systematically misappropriating foundation assets for personal corporate acquisition is immediately stripped of their voting rights."

A murmur rippled through the boardroom. Several senior executives shifted uncomfortably in their ergonomic chairs, whispering among themselves. Victoria slowly reached out, her manicured fingers picking up the document. Her eyes scanned the legal prose, and for the first time since Julian had known her, the color drained entirely from her face. The airtight audit trail proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that she had diverted millions from the charity accounts to buy out minority shareholders behind the board's back.

"This... this is an internal family matter," Victoria said, her voice dropping an octave as she fought to maintain her composure in front of her subordinates. "It has no bearing on my corporate authority."

"It has everything to do with your fiduciary duty," Julian countered, finally looking up to meet her panicked gaze with absolute, unyielding coldness. "You wanted to run this company like a monarchy, Victoria. But in a monarchy, treason against the crown has consequences. Effective immediately, you are suspended from all executive duties pending a full forensic investigation."
