Chapter 5

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung shut, leaving Victoria standing alone in the cavernous hallway outside, the hum of the air conditioning sounding like a distant, mocking hum. The pristine white pantsuit that had felt like armor just an hour ago now felt like a straitjacket. She could hear the muffled voices of the board members inside, discussing her removal with an eagerness that betrayed how deeply they had feared her authoritarian grip. For years, she had ruled through intimidation, ensuring that no one dared question her methods. Now, the very system she had weaponized against others had been turned entirely against her.

As she walked down the long, carpeted corridor toward the private elevator, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor, she encountered Marcus, the senior head of estate security. Marcus was a large, stoic man who had served the Vance family for over twenty years, fiercely loyal to Eleanor and Julian. He stepped aside respectfully, but his eyes held no warmth—only a quiet, chilling recognition of her fallen status.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his voice flat and devoid of the deference he had always shown her.

Victoria stopped, her pride stinging. "Do not forget your place, Marcus. I am still mistress of the estate."

"For now, ma'am," Marcus replied evenly, meeting her fierce glare without flinching. "Mr. Julian gave strict instructions this morning. All household staff report directly to him until the financial audit is concluded. Your access codes to the east wing have already been revoked."

Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. The realization that her domestic control had been severed just as swiftly as her corporate power hit her with the force of a physical blow. She had spent her entire marriage believing that love and loyalty were weak, easily bought and discarded commodities. She had surrounded herself with luxury, treating people like chess pieces on a board, assuming she would always dictate the rules of the game. Now, standing in the sterile corporate hallway with her empire crumbling around her, she understood the terrifying isolation of her own making.

She stepped into the private elevator, pressing the button for the underground parking garage. The descent felt agonizingly slow, a downward spiral mirroring her rapid descent from absolute power. When the doors slid open, her waiting limousine sat idling in the dim light, the chauffeur holding the door open with a neutral expression. She climbed inside, pulling her beige coat tightly around her shoulders as the city traffic blurred past her window. The war for the Vance estate was far from over, and Victoria knew she still had a few desperate moves left to make before she surrendered her crown for good.
