Chapter 9 - The Queen’s Arrival

Claire stepped out of the elevator as if she were entering a grand ballroom rather than a hostage situation. Her emerald green dress shimmered under the dim crimson emergency lights, and her blond hair was styled to absolute perfection. She looked down at Marcus groaning on the floor, then over at Maeve standing defensively in front of Julian’s wheelchair, before finally letting her cold, calculating gaze rest on her husband.

“Good morning, darling,” Claire said sweetly, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm as she walked gracefully into the center of the room. “I see you’ve been making new friends.”

Julian stared at her, the final remnants of any lingering illusion about the woman he had loved completely incinerating in his chest. Every shared memory, every anniversary, every whispered promise of sickness and health—it was all a carefully constructed theater designed to mask a cold-blooded financial execution.

“You waited until I was broken before you struck, Claire,” Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying a weight that made even Claire pause. “You couldn't beat me when I was standing up, so you had to poison me from the inside out.”

Claire let out a light, musical laugh, stepping closer until she was standing just a few feet away from his wheelchair. She reached out, her manicured fingers brushing casually against the thick wool blanket covering his paralyzed legs.

“Oh, Julian, don’t be so dramatic,” Claire sighed, feigning deep disappointment. “You built an empire on ruthless corporate backstabbing. You taught me everything I know. When your helicopter went down and left you broken on that asphalt, you weren't an asset anymore. You were a liability. A very expensive, breathing anchor weighing down my portfolio.”

“And poisoning me slowly over two years was your idea of a mercy?” Julian countered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire.

“It was efficient,” Claire replied coldly, dropping her sweet facade as her eyes hardened into sharp slits. “And now, thanks to your little stunt with the media leak, we don't have time for efficiency anymore. Marcus, get up.”

Marcus grimaced, pulling himself up with the help of one of the tactical guards, his face pale with pain and lingering fury. He looked at Claire, speaking in a harsh whisper. “The girl sent an outbound data packet to the Tribune before we caught her. The files are out, Claire.”

Claire’s smile vanished completely. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking stark and predatory under the crimson lights. She turned slowly to look at Maeve, stepping toward her with deliberate, terrifying slowness.

“You stupid little whore,” Claire hissed, raising her hand and striking Maeve across the face with a sharp, brutal slap that echoed through the quiet penthouse.

Maeve stumbled back, catching herself against the edge of the mahogany desk, her cheek burning red. But she didn't cry out; she simply glared back at Claire with fierce, unbroken defiance.

Before Claire could strike her again, Julian moved with shocking, desperate speed. Using his powerful upper body strength, he shoved the heavy wooden side table straight into Claire’s path, forcing her to stumble back.

“Don't you ever touch her,” Julian growled, his voice a low, threatening rumble that vibrated through the room.

Claire regained her balance, her chest heaving with rage as she pointed a trembling finger at the tactical guards. “Kill them both. Make it look like a botched robbery.”
