Chapter 10 - The Turning Point

The two tactical guards raised their suppressed sidearms in unison, their movements cold and mechanical. The crimson emergency lights cast long, jagged shadows across the polished hardwood floor, turning the opulent penthouse into a lethal arena. Julian’s mind raced through every possible escape route, but there was nowhere left to run. He positioned his wheelchair slightly in front of Maeve, using his own body as a human shield, though he knew it was a futile gesture against high-caliber rounds.
“Do it,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling with adrenaline and malice as she stepped back out of the line of fire.
Before the guard’s finger could squeeze the trigger, a sharp, piercing sound echoed through the entire building. It wasn't a gunshot. It was the heavy, automated klaxon of the penthouse security system, shifting from emergency red back to brilliant white as the main electrical grid violently rebooted.
Suddenly, the massive smart-home speakers lining the ceiling crackled with static, and a loud, automated digital voice boomed across every room in the building.
“EXTERNAL BROADCAST CONFIRMED. MEDIA SERVERS SYNCHRONIZED. LAW ENFORCEMENT OVERRIDE ENGAGED.”
Marcus froze, his hand dropping from his injured knee. His eyes went wide with sheer panic as he looked toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the street below.
Down on the avenue, the three black tactical SUVs hadn't just brought corporate enforcers—red and blue flashing lights were now illuminating the entire block. A convoy of unmarked federal cruisers and local police vehicles had swarmed the building, completely sealing off all exits.
“You fools,” Julian muttered, a dark, triumphant smile finally breaking across his face as he looked at Claire and Marcus. “You thought you locked us in a cage. You actually locked yourselves in a vault.”
Claire spun around, her face twisting in sheer disbelief and horror as she stared at the glass doors of the private elevator. The digital display above the doors was no longer flashing green or red; it was locked solid in a flashing amber hold, displaying a federal subpoena code.
“This isn't possible,” Claire breathed out, her composure completely shattering. “Marcus, you said the local precinct was in our pocket!”
“Not the federal cybercrime division, they aren't,” a cool, calm voice echoed from the elevator shaft.
The heavy metal doors didn't slide open electronically—they were blown open with a pneumatic breaching tool. Smoke billowed into the grand hallway as heavily armed federal marshals poured into the penthouse, their badges gleaming under the bright overhead lights. At the front of the unit stood a tall, sharp-featured woman in a dark trench coat, holding an open federal warrant in her hand.
“Claire Vance? Marcus Vance?” the federal agent called out, her voice cutting through the smoke like a razor blade. “You’re under arrest for corporate espionage, attempted assassination, and conspiracy to commit murder.”

The two tactical guards dropped their weapons instantly, raising their hands behind their heads without a moment's hesitation. Marcus stumbled back against the wall, sliding down into a pathetic heap, while Claire stood frozen in her emerald green dress, staring in absolute horror as the cold steel handcuffs were snapped tightly around her wrists.
