Chapter 8 - The Price of Defiance

Julian’s chest tightened as he watched Maeve kneeling on the cold floor, surrounded by armed enforcers. The synthetic neurotoxin running through his veins made his muscles feel heavy and unresponsive, but his mind was calculating every possible angle with razor-sharp precision. He couldn't physically fight three armed men, but a cornered predator always had one final strike left.

“Leave her out of this, Marcus,” Julian commanded, his voice carrying an icy authority that briefly made the lead tactical guard hesitate. “She’s an agency temp. She didn't even know my name yesterday morning. If you want the flash drive, negotiate with me.”

Marcus turned slowly, looking down at Julian with a mixture of amusement and contempt. He signaled the guards to step back from Maeve, though they kept their weapons loosely at their sides, ready to react at a second's notice.

“Negotiate?” Marcus chuckled softly, walking over to stand right in front of Julian’s wheelchair. “Julian, you are in no position to negotiate terms. You are a paralyzed invalid sitting in a chair you don't even own anymore. The board has dissolved your shares, Claire has filed for sole ownership of the estate, and by nightfall, you’ll be legally declared mentally incompetent.”

“Try filing those papers when the entire corporate portfolio is sitting on a public media server,” Julian shot back, maintaining eye contact without a single flicker of fear. “You think encryption files auto-delete on a timer? That drive was rigged to a decentralized cloud backup. The moment Maeve walked into the lobby, the entire contents of that drive were mirrored to three different investigative desks across the country.”

Marcus’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. His gray eyes darted toward the guard by the door. “Check the network logs. Is there an outgoing data packet?”

The guard pulled out a portable terminal, tapping frantically on the screen. His face drained of color as he looked up at Marcus, shaking his head. “Boss… encrypted data transfer confirmed. Outbound ping sent to the Tribune newsroom ten minutes ago.”

Marcus spun back to face Julian, his mask of calm completely shattering. In a fit of pure rage, he lunged forward, grabbing Julian by the collar of his shirt and hauling him halfway out of the wheelchair.

“Where is the hard copy?” Marcus roared, spittle flying from his lips. “Where is the physical backup?”

Maeve acted on pure adrenaline. While Marcus was distracted by his sudden fury, she scrambled to her feet, lunged forward, and slammed a heavy brass paperweight straight into the back of Marcus’s knee. Marcus let out a sharp cry of agony, collapsing hard onto the floor and releasing Julian, who slumped back heavily into his wheelchair.

The two tactical guards immediately raised their weapons, training their laser sights directly on Maeve’s chest.

“Hold your fire!” Marcus screamed from the floor, clutching his injured knee as he glared up with murderous intent. “Don't shoot her yet. I want them both alive when Claire gets here.”

Julian’s breath hitched. Before anyone could react, the private elevator chimed once more, and the doors slid open to reveal Claire standing in the entryway, dressed in her emerald green dress, wearing a chillingly sweet smile.
