Chapter 1 - The Emerald Departure

The heavy oak door clicked shut with a hollow echo that seemed to mock the emptiness of the sprawling penthouse. Julian sat motionless in his sleek black wheelchair, a thick wool blanket draped over his motionless legs, his muscular shoulders tensing beneath a web of dark, intricate tattoos. Across the polished hardwood floor, Claire’s emerald green silk dress shimmered under the crystal chandelier. She didn’t look back as she marched toward the exit, her stiletto heels clicking a rhythmic death march for whatever was left of their marriage. Julian watched her retreating silhouette with a cold, piercing gaze, feeling the familiar burn of frustration clawing at his chest.

“My legs are paralyzed,” Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the heavy morning air like a shard of ice. “My brain isn't.”

Claire froze mid-stride, her manicured hand resting on the brass doorknob. She turned her head slowly, casting a sharp, venomous glance over her bare shoulder. Her expression was a mask of cold calculation, devoid of any lingering affection or pity.

“Keep telling yourself that, Julian,” Claire snapped, her voice dripping with calculated cruelty. “A brilliant mind locked inside a broken body is just a tragedy waiting to be forgotten. I’m done waiting for a miracle that’s never coming.”

“You’re leaving because the money is finally running out, aren't you?” Julian retorted, his jaw tightening until the muscle ticked. “Don’t dress this up as emotional exhaustion. You’re a parasite looking for a new host.”

“Watch your tone,” Claire hissed, stepping fully around to face him, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. “I gave the best years of my life to a man who thought his ego could conquer a spine injury. Enjoy your little wheelchair. Someone else is coming up the elevator to wipe your chin.”

Before Julian could fire back another stinging remark, the private elevator chime chimed softly down the hall. Claire smirked, wrenched the door open, and vanished into the morning fog of the city, leaving Julian alone with his simmering rage. Moments later, the heavy footsteps of the new agency nurse approached the threshold. A red-haired woman stepped into the grand room, carrying a woven bowl filled with crisp white towels and medical supplies. She moved with quiet grace, her crisp maid uniform contrasting sharply with the opulent surroundings. She walked straight toward Julian and placed the heavy bowl down on the mahogany side table with a soft thud.

“Morning,” the maid said softly, her green eyes scanning his tense posture with practiced neutrality.

Julian stared at her, his dark eyes analyzing every detail of her worn expression. He couldn’t shake the strange feeling that she didn't belong in this gilded cage.

“Why are you still here?” Julian asked bluntly, his voice sharp with suspicion.

“You pay thirty five an hour,” the maid replied instantly, meeting his fierce gaze without flinching. “The Agency keeps ten. My rent is due.”

Julian let out a dry, humorless chuckle, leaning forward in his chair. But as the maid stepped closer to tend to his paralyzed legs, her hand brushed against the heavy wool blanket, and she froze, her face turning deathly pale as she leaned in close to his ear, whispering words that made his blood run cold.

“What is it?” Julian whispered back, his heart hammering against his ribs. “There's something underneath your mattress.”
