Chapter 2 - The Hidden Compartment

The words hung in the quiet air of the penthouse like a physical weight, pressing down on Julian’s chest until it was hard to breathe. He stared at the red-haired maid, her face mere inches from his, searching her eyes for any sign of a joke or a cruel test orchestrated by Claire. But he found only genuine, pulsing panic. The room seemed to shrink, the opulent walls closing in around them as the implication of her discovery sank into his consciousness.

“What did you say?” Julian asked, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper, the authority in his tone belying his physical helplessness.

“I was tucking the fresh sheets under the frame,” the maid whispered back, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped the edge of the wooden side table. “I felt something rigid, something that doesn't belong to a standard hospital bed. I ran my fingers along the underside, and there’s a compartment. A heavy metal panel bolted into the wood frame.”

Julian’s mind raced through a frantic catalog of possibilities. He had lived in this penthouse for three years following the accident that robbed him of his mobility. Claire had handled the interior redesign, the staff hiring, and every single logistical detail of their domestic life. He had trusted her implicitly, or perhaps he had simply been too consumed by his own physical rehabilitation to pay attention. But Julian was a man who built an empire before his accident by trusting no one and verifying everything.

“Listen to me,” Julian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with intense focus. “What is your name?”

“Maeve,” she answered, swallowing hard.

“Maeve, walk away from the bed right now. Pretend you are adjusting the window drapes. Act normal,” Julian instructed in a rapid, low murmur, using his peripheral vision to scan the hallway for any lingering security cameras. “Claire left less than ten minutes ago, but she left someone behind. I can feel it. There are eyes on us.”

Maeve’s breath hitched, but she possessed a cool undercurrent of survival instinct. Without a word, she straightened up, smoothed the front of her white apron, and walked gracefully toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the skyline. She pretended to adjust the heavy velvet drapes while keeping her body angled so she could still see Julian.

Julian gripped the wheels of his chair, using his powerful upper body strength to pivot slightly, positioning himself closer to the master bed. The mattress was thick, custom-built, and rested on a heavy mahogany platform frame. He reached down, his tattooed fingers sliding beneath the heavy fabric of the quilt, searching blindly for the latch Maeve had described. His calloused fingertips brushed against cold, textured steel. There was a seam, expertly hidden beneath the upholstery, held shut by a magnetic locking mechanism that required a specific digital frequency to release.

“Maeve,” Julian murmured, his voice strained as he kept his eyes fixed on the hallway mirror. “It’s a biometric lock. It needs a fingerprint or a code.”

Maeve turned slowly from the window, her red hair catching the morning light as she walked back toward him. Her face was set with grim determination. She didn't look like a simple agency nurse anymore; she looked like an accomplice in a dangerous game neither of them had signed up to play.

“Step aside,” Maeve whispered, her voice steady. “Let me look at it.”

She knelt beside his wheelchair, sliding her hand beneath the heavy mattress. Her fingers traced the perimeter of the concealed panel until she found a tiny, recessed button that Julian’s hand hadn't reached. She pressed it firmly. A faint, electronic hum vibrated through the wooden frame. With a soft click, a section of the mattress base popped open, revealing a dark, shadowy cavity inside the core of the bed. Julian leaned forward, peering into the hidden space, and his breath caught in his throat as his eyes adjusted to the dim light, resting upon a stack of legal documents and a heavy, waterproof tactical case that Claire had gone to extraordinary lengths to bury beneath him.
