Chapter 5 - The Flash Drive of Doom

Julian stared at the small black flash drive resting in the palm of Maeve’s hand. The embossed lettering on the casing read PROJECT LAZARUS - PHASE 3. The numbers sent a chilling shriek through his nervous system. He didn't know what Phase 3 meant, but given the medical report they had just uncovered regarding his synthetic neurotoxin poisoning, it couldn't possibly be anything good.

“Plug it in,” Julian said, his voice hard as stone. “Use my laptop on the desk over there.”

Maeve hesitated for a split second, looking at the door as if expecting Marcus to burst back into the room at any moment. But the grim reality of their situation gave her no choice. If Claire and Marcus were moving this quickly to dismantle his life and institutionalize him, playing it safe was a death sentence. She rushed across the room to the mahogany writing desk, opened Julian’s sleek laptop, and plugged the encrypted flash drive into the USB port.

A red LED light on the drive blinked twice, and a terminal window popped up on the screen, demanding a six-digit decryption key.

“It’s encrypted,” Maeve called out from across the room. “We need a password.”

“Try my corporate passcode,” Julian said, rattling off a string of numbers that had governed his financial empire for a decade.

Maeve typed it in furiously. The screen flashed red, displaying a stark, bold error message: ACCESS DENIED. ATTEMPT 1 OF 3.

“That didn't work,” Maeve said, her voice laced with panic. “Two more tries and it will auto-format and wipe the drive clean.”

Julian closed his eyes, forcing his brain to strip away the panic and dive into the labyrinth of his own history with Claire. She wasn't a tech genius; she was a social climber who relied on vanity and control. What numbers did she obsess over? Not birthdays, not anniversaries—those were too obvious. He thought about the day they met, the gala where he fell into her carefully laid trap.

“Try the date of the St. Jude charity gala,” Julian said, his eyes snapping open. “Six digits. Month, day, year. October twelfth, nineteen.”

Maeve’s fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the numbers with breathless precision. She slammed her finger down on the enter key. The screen flickered, turning from harsh red to a deep, glowing green. A massive file directory materialized on the display, listing thousands of audio logs, video recordings, and financial transfers.

“It worked,” Maeve breathed out in sheer disbelief.

“Open the top audio file,” Julian instructed, gripping the wheels of his chair and rolling closer to the desk, his muscles straining with the effort.

Maeve clicked the first audio file, dated eighteen months ago—right around the time of his suspicious car crash. The laptop speakers crackled with static for a brief second before a familiar, crystal-clear voice filled the quiet penthouse. It was Claire’s voice, cold, calculating, and dripping with malicious satisfaction.

“The dosage is working perfectly,” Claire’s recorded voice echoed through the room. “His cognitive functions remain sharp enough to sign the corporate restructuring documents, but his motor control is completely shot. The doctors think it’s a permanent side effect of the collision. It’s brilliant, Marcus. Within two years, everything he built will legally belong to us, and he’ll be completely helpless to stop it.”

A second voice joined the recording—Marcus Vance.

“And what about the final phase?” Marcus asked on the audio clip. “When the liquidation is complete? What do we do with him then?”

“We put him away,” Claire laughed lightly, a chilling, hollow sound that made Julian’s blood freeze. “A quiet, private facility where nobody asks questions. A tragic end for a brilliant man.”

Julian sat in stunned silence, staring at the glowing screen. The concrete proof of his wife’s monstrous betrayal played on a loop in the empty room. But before they could open the next folder containing the financial routing numbers, the laptop screen suddenly went entirely black. A single line of flashing white text appeared in the center of the monitor: REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED. YOUR LOCATION HAS BEEN BROADCASTED TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
