Chapter 8: The Price of Silence

The room remained suffocatingly quiet. Arthur leaned forward, gasping slightly through his cannula. "If you expose this, Henri... the Laurent stock will crater to zero by tomorrow morning. Tens of thousands of employees will lose their pensions. Your own fortune—everything you worked fifteen years to build—will vanish in the scandal. Is vengeance worth destroying your own life?"

Julian looked at Arthur, then turned to look at his mother.

Hélène stood quietly by the bookshelf. Her hands were folded over her stomach, her face calm, carrying the dignity of someone who had survived with nothing and needed nothing from these men.

"I survived thirty years without your billions, Arthur," Hélène said gently. "A good life is not measured by the size of the vault you leave behind. It is measured by the truth you can speak without lowering your eyes."

Julian felt the final chains of his corporate indoctrination shatter. All his life, he had measured his self-worth in quarterly yields, market dominance, and the approval of an old man who had stolen his birthright.

Julian turned back to the terrified board members. "Call the auditors. Call the Serious Fraud Office. Tell them the CEO of Laurent Global Capital is stepping down—and bringing forty years of sealed files with him."

Arthur let out a ragged cry, slumping back into his chair as the lawyers scrambled for their phones. Julian took his mother’s arm, turned his back on the billion-pound manor, and walked out into the cool evening air.
