Chapter 6: The Lion's Den

The Laurent Manor in Surrey was a monument to old money and ruthless ambition. Surrounded by four hundred acres of manicured oak woods and guarded by private security gates, it was a fortress designed to keep the world out.

Julian walked through the heavy mahogany doors, not as a submissive protege, but as an invading force. Behind him walked Hélène, dressed in a simple, elegant dark blue wool coat Julian had bought for her in Paris. She held her head high, though her fingers gripped Julian’s forearm with quiet trepidation.

Arthur Laurent sat in his high-backed leather armchair inside the expansive library, a roaring fire crackling in the stone hearth. Across the room sat two senior partners of Laurent Global Capital and the family’s chief legal counsel.

"Julian," Arthur began, gesturing to the empty chair before him. "You brought an uninvited guest to our emergency board briefing."

Hélène stepped forward into the warm firelight. Her eyes locked onto Arthur Laurent. "It has been thirty-two years, Arthur. You haven't changed. Still hiding behind marble walls and hired men."

Arthur’s hand shook, causing the amber scotch in his crystal tumbler to spill onto his wool trousers. His face drained of all color. The oxygen machine beside him hissed rhythmically in the dead silence of the room.

"Hélène... Vaneau," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief.

"You told me my son died in the flames," Hélène said, her voice steady, ringing with the moral authority of a mother who had survived hell. "And you raised him under your own surname so you could look at his face every day and pretend you were his savior instead of his thief."
