Chapter 15: The Warmth of the Dawn

Five years later.

The pre-dawn light over Bordeaux broke in soft shades of gold and rose. The cobblestones of Rue Saint-Martin were slick with morning dew.

Inside *Boulangerie Vaneau & Fils*, the warmth from the stone oven filled the street with the timeless scent of roasted grain, sweet butter, and anise. Henri worked at the wooden bench, his hands moving with practiced grace as he shaped the morning dough.

Beside him stood Sophie, a gifted local culinary apprentice and his partner of three years, sliding freshly baked golden croissants onto cooling racks. In the corner near the window, seated in a comfortable cushioned rocking chair, seventy-eight-year-old Hélène held her two-year-old grandson, Marc, gently rocking him as the child babbled happily at the glowing fire.

Henri wiped the flour from his hands, walked over, and kissed his mother’s forehead, then leaned down to brush a kiss on his son’s cheek.

The bakery door chimed as the morning crowd began to arrive—early commuters, school children, and old neighbors coming in from the cold.

Henri stepped behind the counter, unlatched the front display, and smiled at the first customer of the day.

"Good morning," Henri said, handing a warm, fresh pastry across the counter. "Taste this. It’s made with love."
