Chapter 12: Opening the Shutters

On a sunny Saturday morning in October, Henri unlatched the heavy wooden shutters of *Boulangerie Vaneau & Fils*.

A line of nearly fifty people was already waiting on the cobblestone street. Local shopkeepers, elderly residents who had bought pastries from Hélène’s cart for decades, and curious visitors who had read about the Lyon whistleblowing scandal gathered outside the glass display cases.

Inside, the counter was filled with golden baguettes, crusty country loaves, dark rye, and trays of warm, sugar-dusted anise brioches.

Behind the counter, Henri worked the register with a broad, unforced smile, wrapping warm pastries in brown paper. Hélène stood at the pass, greeting old friends with tears of pride, introducing her son to everyone who crossed the threshold.

Among the crowd was an investigative journalist from *Le Monde* who had covered the Laurent trial. He bought a warm loaf, stepped aside, and watched Henri hand a free pastry to a little boy holding his mother's hand.

"Mr. Vaneau," the reporter called out gently. "You walked away from a fund managing eight billion euros. Looking back at the empire you forfeited, do you have any regrets?"

Henri looked around the warm, bustling shop—at the flour on his apron, the smiling faces of his neighbors, and his mother laughing by the ovens.

"I spent my whole life managing wealth," Henri replied. "Today is the first day I actually possess it."
