Chapter 9: The Price of Prestige

Back in the city, far away from the quiet solitude of the estate, the fallout of the wedding disaster was playing out across financial news tickers and digital tabloid columns. The high-society wedding of the year had transformed overnight into the corporate scandal of the decade.

Elena sat in the minimalist living room of her penthouse apartment, staring blankly at a television screen broadcasting muted footage of her ruined reception. The white gift boxes scattered across the ballroom floor were replayed on a loop, a stark visual metaphor for her entire life’s ambition collapsing in real-time.

Her phone buzzed relentlessly on the marble coffee table. It was her publicist, her legal team, and various high-society acquaintances eager to distance themselves from the unfolding fraud investigation. None of them called to offer comfort. In their world, failure was contagious, and disgrace was an unpardonable sin.

The heavy oak door of the penthouse unlocked, and Arthur walked in. He didn't look angry anymore; he looked completely indifferent—which was infinitely worse. He carried a single leather briefcase, setting it down near the entryway without taking off his coat.

"The annulment papers have been filed," Arthur said evenly, his voice devoid of emotion. "My legal team has already severed all joint business ventures. As far as the public is concerned, this marriage never legally existed."

Elena looked up, her eyes red-rimmed and desperate. "Arthur, please. We can fix this. We can restructure the accounts, claim it was a clerical error by David—"

"Stop, Elena," Arthur interrupted, holding up a hand to cut her off. "Don't insult my intelligence any further. You forged your own father’s will, manipulated his estate, and used me as a shield to legitimize stolen wealth. I built my empire through hard work and clean ledgers. I will not let your criminal delusions drag my company down into the dirt."

He turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob. "Your bank accounts have been frozen by court order. The authorities will be here within the hour to execute the search warrant. I suggest you pack a bag."

The door clicked shut behind him, sealing her fate in absolute silence. Elena sat alone in the vast, expensive room, realizing too late that the empire she had built on sand had finally washed away into the sea.
