Chapter 4: Shadows in the Dressing Room

The heavy oak door of the bridal suite clicked shut, locking out the distant strains of a slow waltz playing in the ballroom below. The room was draped in soft rose lighting and filled with the scent of expensive white lilies. Clara stood near the ornate floor-length mirror, her fingers finally pulling the manila envelope out from the safety of her satin skirt. The red wax seal remained unbroken, bearing the cold imprint of her father's crest.
Julian leaned against the carved wooden doorframe, keeping watch while Leo sat quietly on a velvet ottoman, coloring in a small notebook with a blue crayon. The silence in the suite felt thick, charged with an unspoken dread.
"Are you going to open it?" Julian asked quietly, his eyes fixed on the door.
"I have to," Clara replied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her fingers. "Our father died believing his entire estate was divided equally between Elena and me. But nothing about this wedding is normal. Elena insisted on this specific venue, this exact guest list, and keeping Beatrice close by to control the narrative."
She carefully broke the red wax seal with the edge of a silver hair pin. Inside lay a stack of heavy parchment documents covered in crisp, legal typescript, along with a handwritten codicil dated just three days before their father’s sudden stroke six years ago. Clara scanned the first page, her eyes widening as the grim reality of the words sank into her consciousness.
"What does it say?" Julian asked, pushing off the doorframe and walking toward her.
"It’s not a wedding gift," Clara whispered, her breath catching in her throat. "It’s our father's true final will. The one Elena claimed was lost in the fire at his estate. According to this, Elena forged the document that gave her sole control of the family trust. And she didn't just cut me out—she systematically stripped our father of his assets while he was medicated."
Leo looked up from his notebook, sensing the shift in the room's energy. "Mom? Are we in trouble?"
Clara knelt down beside her son, taking his small, warm hand in hers. "No, sweetie. We're not in trouble. But we are going to make sure the truth comes out."
Julian took the documents from Clara’s hands, reading through the legal clauses with a sharp, analytical eye. As a corporate strategist, he understood the gravity of what they were holding. This wasn't just a family betrayal; it was financial fraud on a massive scale, timed perfectly to be buried beneath the celebration of Elena’s new life and high-society marriage.

"She used this wedding as a fortress," Julian murmured, looking up from the papers. "By surrounding herself with influential guests and heavy security, she assumed no one would ever question the provenance of anything inside these walls. If Beatrice hadn't tripped over that box, this envelope might have gone straight into a storage unit, hidden forever."
"We need to confront her," Clara said, rising to her feet with a newfound resolve hardening her features. "Before the night is over, Elena is going to explain why our father’s dying wishes were stolen and buried under gold ribbons."
