Chapter 5: The Confrontation on the Balcony

The cool night air of the stone balcony offered a sharp contrast to the stifling heat of the ballroom. Below, the manicured gardens glowed under strings of fairy lights, while the muffled sound of a string quartet drifted upward like a fading heartbeat. Elena stood near the balustrade, holding a flute of champagne, her white wedding gown catching the silver light of the moon.

She turned as the heavy glass door slid open, expecting her new husband. Instead, she saw Clara stepping out into the shadows, holding the open manila envelope in her hand. Julian followed closely behind, lingering near the doorway to ensure they were entirely undisturbed.

Elena’s polite bridal smile faltered instantly. The glass in her hand tilted, a few drops of champagne spilling over the rim and hitting the stone floor with a dark splash.

"Clara," Elena said, her voice dropping all pretense of warmth. "What are you doing out here? The reception is inside."

"Saving you from yourself, Elena," Clara replied, walking forward until she stood just a few feet away from her sister. She held up the thick parchment papers. "Is this why you were so desperate to control every detail of today? Were you hoping that burying father's real will inside a wedding gift box would keep it hidden forever?"

Elena’s face drained of color, the heavy contour makeup stark against her pale skin. For a second, the mask of the untouchable bride cracked, revealing the panicked girl beneath. But the terror quickly curdled into defensive fury.

"You went through my gifts?" Elena hissed, stepping forward. "How dare you? That is a criminal offense, Clara. Those packages are private property!"

"Property stolen from our father's estate," Julian interjected smoothly from the doorway. His voice was dangerously calm. "Forgery and wire fraud carry severe penalties, Elena. Even for someone with your social standing."

Elena spun around to face Julian, her eyes flashing with venom. "Stay out of this, Julian. This is a family matter. Clara has always been jealous of my life, my success, and this marriage. She’s making up stories because she couldn't stand to see me happy for a single day."

"The signature on this codicil was forged by your accountant, David Vance," Clara said quietly, reciting the name printed on the legal documents. "We both know Father was completely incapacitated by the time that document was drafted. You left me with nothing, Elena, while you built an empire on a lie."

Elena stared at her sister, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath the tulle of her gown. The silence between them stretched thin, heavy with the weight of years of resentment and unspoken crimes.

"And what do you expect to achieve by waving these papers around?" Elena challenged, her voice trembling slightly. "If you make a scene tonight, you destroy this family's reputation completely. My husband’s family will ruin us both in the press. You'll destroy everything, Clara."

"No, Elena," Clara said, stepping closer until she could look directly into her sister’s terrified eyes. "You destroyed everything the day you traded our father’s legacy for a diamond ring. Tonight, the truth comes out."
