Chapter 10: Healing Old Wounds

Back at the estate, the autumn air carried the crisp scent of burning leaves and damp earth. Clara and Leo were out in the overgrown garden, armed with gardening gloves, small trowels, and packets of tulip bulbs. The sun was warm on their backs, melting away the lingering chill of the past few days.
Julian stood near the patio edge, holding a steaming mug of coffee, watching them work. The heavy legal battles were still ongoing, but for today, the courtroom felt a million miles away.
Leo plunged his trowel into the dark soil, digging a small hole with intense concentration. "Mom, do you think these will bloom in the spring?"
Clara smiled, dropping a bulb into the earth and covering it gently with rich soil. "They always do, sweetie. They sleep underground all winter, gathering strength, and then when the weather warms up, they push right through the dirt."
Julian walked over, crouching down beside them. He handed Clara a small watering can. "The forensic audit is complete," he said quietly, ensuring Leo was distracted by an earthworm crawling past his shoe. "Every asset has been accounted for. The trust is fully restored, and the foundation is being set up in your father's name, exactly as he originally wanted."
Clara looked at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. "Thank you, Julian. For staying. For not letting me walk away when things got complicated."
"I told you a long time ago, Clara," Julian replied softly, his gaze steady and warm. "Some things are worth fighting for. And truth has a way of finding the light, no matter how deep someone tries to bury it."
A gentle breeze rustled the oak trees overhead, scattering a golden shower of leaves across the lawn. For the first time in years, the estate felt less like a monument to a bitter past and more like a home.
They spent the entire afternoon working side by side, turning the neglected soil into beds of potential life. Every scoop of dirt felt like an act of reclamation, washing away the stain of Elena’s betrayal with honest labor and shared purpose.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of amber and violet, Leo held up his muddy hands with a proud grin. "We did a lot of work today, Mom!"
Clara laughed, wiping a smudge of dirt off his cheek with her thumb. "Yes, we did, buddy. Yes, we did."
