Chapter 7 - The Carbon Lock

The heavy scent of ozone and chilled air began to seep from the overhead vents as Sector Four’s atmospheric controls locked into place. Marcus dumped his weight against the heavy wooden door of the utility pantry, using his shoulder to smash the cheap latch. The door swung open violently, revealing a cramped, windowless space dominated by a massive circuit breaker panel and a low, rectangular metal hatch set into the base of the back wall.

"There," Elena panted, pointing a manicured finger toward the dark opening. She was barefoot now, the red high heels abandoned back in the living room, leaving her vulnerable against the cold tile floor.

Marcus gently lowered Coley onto the kitchen floor, her white dress stained dark with blood. He crawled inside the cramped utility closet, shining his smartphone flashlight into the ventilation shaft. The metal tunnel was narrow, barely three feet wide, lined with black acoustic insulation and thick bundles of fiber-optic cables. It stretched horizontally into darkness before angling sharply upward toward the exterior wall of the garage.

"Coley, listen to me," Marcus said, turning back to face her with pleading eyes. "You can’t do this. The exertion will..."

"Marcus," Coley interrupted, her voice surprisingly steady despite the pale sheen of sweat coating her skin. She reached out and grabbed the collar of his black shirt, pulling him down so their eyes met. "If I stay here, I die. If I go through that tunnel, I might make it to the garage and hit the manual override for the security gates. It’s our only chance."

Elena stood in the doorway, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as she watched them with a conflicted expression.

"She’s right, Marcus," Elena murmured, her voice uncharacteristically soft. "The ventilation shaft connects directly to the server room sub-level. There’s an emergency exit hatch there that isn't tied to the main smart-system."

Marcus looked up at Elena, a dark, bitter laugh escaping his throat. "And how do you know that, Elena? Did you map out your escape route before you initiated the corporate buyout?"

Elena flinched, biting her lower lip until a tiny drop of blood appeared. "I backed up the building blueprints when we bought the estate. I didn't think we’d ever need them like this."

"Seven minutes remaining," the smart-speaker echoed from the kitchen ceiling, its cheerful tone jarring against the grim reality of the room.

Marcus turned back to Coley, his eyes burning with unshed tears. He carefully scooped her up and slid her feet first into the dark metal opening of the ventilation shaft. Coley winced, biting down hard on her lower lip to keep from screaming as her lower body scraped against the rough edge of the metal frame.

"Go," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking. "I’ll follow right behind you."

"No," Coley shook her head, pushing gently against his chest with her weak hands. "You stay here, Marcus. If Elena tries to lock the hatch from the inside, or if the system triggers a structural seal, someone has to manually override the breaker panel from the outside. You have to shut down the main power grid."

Marcus hesitated, looking from the dark tunnel to the massive electrical breaker panel mounted on the wall inside the pantry.

"I can't leave you in there alone," Marcus protested.

"You aren't leaving me," Coley whispered, a faint, sad smile touching the corners of her pale lips. "You’re buying me time. Now go."

She pulled herself forward into the darkness, using her elbows to drag her agonizingly heavy body away from the light. Marcus watched her disappear into the shadows until her white dress was completely swallowed by the gloom.

He slowly backed out of the utility closet, standing up in the center of the kitchen. He turned to face Elena, who was standing by the island, watching him with a strange, unreadable expression.

"Six minutes remaining," the speaker announced.

Marcus reached out and grabbed the heavy metal handle of the main breaker panel, his fingers curling around the master switch. But before he could pull it down, Elena lunged forward and slammed her hand over his.

May you like

"Don't pull the master switch yet, Marcus," Elena gasped, her dark eyes wide with sudden terror. "If you cut the power while she’s in the ventilation shaft... the automated fire dampers will slam shut, and they’ll crush her to death."
