Chapter 1 - The First Fracture

The polished white marble floor felt like ice against Coley’s back. Every breath she dragged into her lungs felt like swallowing crushed glass, sharp and entirely insufficient. Her long dark hair fanned out across the cold stone, framing a face pale with sudden, blinding agony. She kept both hands locked tightly over her lower stomach, pressing hard as if physical force might somehow contain the rupture happening inside her. Standing just a few feet away, her breathing measured and shallow, was Elena. The elegant woman in the burgundy silk cowl-neck dress stared down at her with a terrifyingly still composure, the glossy red high heels on her feet catching the sharp morning light.

Then came the heavy slam of the double white doors flying open against the interior wall. Marcus rushed through them, his face carved from pure panic. He wore a rumpled black jacket over a dark shirt, his light brown hair disheveled from whatever desperate run had brought him up the stairs.

"Coley?" Marcus shouted, his voice cracking violently as he dropped to his knees beside the marble.

He didn't look at Elena. He didn't ask what happened. He just hovered his trembling hands over Coley’s body, terrified to touch her, terrified not to.

Coley squinted up at him, tears pooling in her dark lashes. Her lips parted, but no sound came out for a long, agonizing second.

"Don't lie to me," Marcus growled, his gaze darting down to the striking red high heel resting unnaturally close to Coley’s outstretched hand. His jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his bearded cheek. "What did she do?"

Elena’s hands flew up defensively, her palms facing Marcus with a panicked, breathless tremor.

"Marcus, listen!" Elena pleaded, taking half a step backward on those dangerous red heels, her carefully curated composure finally fracturing into raw fear. "It wasn't—you don't understand the sequence of events here. She tripped."

Marcus ignored the excuse, his eyes locked onto Coley’s face as she let out a shallow, agonizing gasp.

"He knows about the trust fund transfer," Coley whispered, her voice a fractured rasp that cut straight through the tense air of the room.

Marcus froze. He slowly turned his head to look directly at Elena, whose face suddenly drained of all remaining color.
