Chapter 3 - The Red Lens

The word system hung heavily in the air, a reminder of the modern architecture that governed every square foot of the luxury estate. Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his heavy boots grinding slightly against the polished white marble. He knew about the cameras, of course—they were supposed to be a state-of-the-art security measure installed after the neighborhood break-ins last winter. But Elena’s sudden, deliberate reference to them carried a completely different, darker connotation.

"What does the system have to do with this?" Marcus demanded, his hand gripping the lapel of his black jacket as if he might need to physically restrain himself from grabbing her.

Elena gave a bitter, humorless laugh, her fingers nervously tracing the delicate fabric of her burgundy silk dress near her collarbone.

"It means we aren't alone, Marcus," Elena said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Every argument, every financial transaction, every secret we’ve kept under this roof—it’s all archived. And not just by a local hard drive in the basement."

On the floor, Coley let out a weak, hacking cough. The pain in her abdomen seemed to have subsided slightly into a dull, throbbing ache, leaving her pale and exhausted against the cold stone. She forced her chin up, her dark hair sticking to her damp forehead.

"She’s lying to you, Marcus," Coley croaked, her voice trembling with exhaustion. "The cameras... they aren't wired to the security company. I found the IP address routing last night. They feed directly to an external server registered under a shell corporation. Elena isn't protecting our assets. She’s selling our proprietary research to the competitors."

Elena’s head snapped toward Coley with genuine venom. The calm, elegant facade vanished entirely, replaced by a flash of pure malice that made her dark eyes look hollow.

"Shut your mouth," Elena hissed, lunging forward with a speed that startled Marcus.

Marcus reacted instantly, stepping hard between them and shoving Elena back. She stumbled on her red high heels, her heel catching in the hem of her long silk dress, but she managed to catch her balance against the edge of a minimalist glass console table.

"Stay away from her," Marcus warned, his voice shaking with a rage that felt frighteningly close to the surface. He turned back to Coley, kneeling down once more to check her pulse at her wrist. It was rapid and weak. "Coley, look at me. Did you call an ambulance?"

Coley shook her head weakly against the marble floor.

"I didn't have time," Coley whispered, her eyes fluttering shut for a terrifying second before she forced them open again. "Elena took my phone the moment I tried to access the server logs. That’s why we were fighting."

Marcus stood up slowly, his face drained of all warmth. He looked at the woman he had loved for five years, seeing her clearly for the very first time.

"Give me the phone, Elena," Marcus said, holding out his open palm. "Right now, or I swear to God I will call the police myself."

Elena slowly reached behind her back, her fingers sliding into the hidden pocket of her skirt. She pulled out a sleek silver smartphone, but instead of handing it over, she tossed it across the room where it shattered against the base of the marble fireplace.

"You're too late, Marcus," Elena smiled, pointing directly up at the ceiling. "The upload finished three minutes ago."
