Chapter 5 - The Locked Perimeter

The heavy smart-lock engaged with a mechanical finality that resonated through the entire floor. Marcus spun around and threw his weight against the double white doors, but the reinforced deadbolts held firm. He rattled the brass handles frantically, his boots sliding slightly on the slick marble, but the doors didn't even budge.
"Elena, open the door!" Marcus yelled, slamming his shoulder against the panels in a desperate surge of adrenaline. "Override the system! Now!"
Elena didn't move toward the door. She stood near the center of the living room, her burgundy silk dress shimmering under the recessed lights, her red high heels firmly planted on the white stone. She reached up and casually touched the pearl earring dangling from her left ear lobe, tapping the small gold post twice with her index finger.
"The system doesn't accept manual overrides once a data transfer protocol initiates," Elena explained, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "It’s a security protocol to prevent tampering. We are officially in lockdown mode until Vanguard Industries verifies the integrity of the files."
On the floor, Coley managed to pull her knees up toward her chest, her face beaded with cold sweat. The pain in her lower abdomen was morphing into something deeper, a dull, rhythmic cramping that terrified her more than the corporate betrayal. She pressed her hand harder against her dress, feeling the dampness spreading against her palm.
"Marcus," Coley choked out, her voice barely audible over his continued pounding on the doors. "Marcus, stop hitting the door. Look at me."
Marcus stopped instantly. The sound of his heavy breathing filled the silent room as he turned around, his eyes locking onto Coley’s pale, sweat-slicked face. The moment he saw the dark stain spreading rapidly across the front of her white dress, all the blood drained from his face.
"Oh, God," Marcus whispered, dropping to his knees beside her once more. He reached out with shaking hands, pressing his fingers against the wet fabric of her dress. When he pulled his hand away, his palm was slick with dark, vivid crimson. "Coley... no. No, no, no."
Elena’s calm facade finally cracked just a fraction. She took a hesitant step forward, her eyes widening as she stared at the spreading blood on the white marble.
"I didn't... I didn't push her that hard," Elena said, her voice rising an octave in sudden, genuine alarm. "She just stumbled over the rug. It was an accident."
"Shut up!" Marcus roared, spinning around to glare at her with such raw, venomous hatred that Elena actually recoiled. "She’s pregnant, you psychotic bitch! She told you this morning!"
Elena froze, her hand flying to her mouth as the color drained completely from her face.
"Pregnant?" Elena whispered, looking down at Coley’s agonizingly tight grip on her stomach. "I... I didn't know. She didn't say anything about..."
"You didn't care!" Marcus screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged sob as he pulled Coley gently into his lap, cradling her head against his black jacket. "You only cared about the money. Call an ambulance, Elena. Use your watch, use the smart-hub, do something!"
Elena slowly lifted her wrist, her fingers trembling violently as she tapped the glass of her smart-watch. The screen flashed a bright, mocking amber.
"Error," a synthetic voice echoed from the tiny speaker on her wrist. "Emergency services are currently blocked by local network quarantine protocols."
Marcus looked up just in time to see the red LED light on the ceiling camera give a sharp, double-pulse.
"Quarantine?" Marcus whispered, his eyes locked on the lens. "Who initiated the quarantine?"
Elena lowered her wrist slowly, her face turning chalk-white as a deep, automated chime echoed from the smart-speaker in the wall, followed by a flat, computerized voice.
