Chapter 2 - The Trust Fund Ghost

Marcus remained frozen on the cold marble, his knees pressing hard into the stone beside Coley’s twitching fingers. The mention of the trust fund transfer hung in the air between them like a physical weight, suffocating and undeniable. Elena’s hands were still raised defensively, her manicured fingers trembling slightly as she stared down at the man she had lived with, plotted with, and ultimately underestimated.

"What did you say?" Marcus asked softly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling register that terrified even Elena. He didn't look back at Coley, but his shoulder pressed protectively against her white dress.

Elena swallowed hard, her throat bobbing visibly beneath the rich silk of her burgundy cowl-neck collar.

"She is hallucinating, Marcus," Elena lied, though her voice lacked its usual sharp authority. "The pain is making her delusional. You know how fragile her state has been lately. We talked about this last week."

"Don't you dare," Coley hissed from the floor. She tried to roll toward Marcus, but a fresh wave of cramps doubled her over, forcing a low moan of pure distress from her lips. "The wire confirmation... it went to your offshore account, Elena. I saw the laptop open on the kitchen island before you threw me down."

Marcus whipped his head back toward Elena, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. The illusion of domestic harmony they had maintained for three years shattered completely in that instant.

"An offshore account?" Marcus repeated, standing up slowly so that he towered over Elena. The black jacket he wore seemed to swallow the light of the modern living room. "I thought that corporate fund was locked until the third quarter audit. How do you have access to the routing numbers?"

Elena took another involuntary step back, her red high heel clicking sharply against the white marble. The sound echoed off the high glass ceilings.

"I was protecting our assets," Elena snapped defensively, finally dropping her hands to her sides and lifting her chin with stubborn defiance. "Your little sister has been bleeding this company dry for months with her reckless spending habits. Someone had to take control of the liquidity before the board forced an emergency liquidation."

"That money was meant for our mother’s medical care," Marcus shouted, the restraint finally breaking in his voice as he stepped directly into Elena’s personal space.

Elena didn't flinch, but her eyes flicked upward for a microsecond, darting toward the corner of the ceiling.

"Careful what you say, Marcus," Elena whispered, her tone suddenly chillingly flat. "The system is recording every single word."
