Chapter 7

The bridal suite was a masterpiece of luxury interior design, featuring vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering skyline of downtown Chicago, and a king-sized bed draped in white silk sheets. But none of them paid attention to the aesthetics. Julian immediately locked the heavy oak door from the inside, sliding a heavy deadbolt into place before drawing the thick velvet blackout curtains across the panoramic windows.

Clara set Lily down on a plush velvet sofa near the fireplace. "Sit tight here, sweetie. Would you like some water?"

Lily nodded quietly. Clara poured a glass from a crystal pitcher on the mahogany sideboard, her hands surprisingly steady given the adrenaline coursing through her veins. She handed it to the little girl, watching with maternal tenderness as Lily took a small, careful sip.

Julian walked directly over to the antique oil painting hanging above the faux fireplace. He gripped the heavy wooden frame and swung it outward on hidden brass hinges, revealing a heavy digital wall safe embedded in the reinforced concrete behind it. The keypad glowed with a faint blue light in the dim room.

"Are you going to wipe the system?" Clara asked, walking over to stand beside him, the train of her white lace wedding gown dragging softly behind her.

"I’m going to initiate a system purge," Julian said, his fingers dancing across the numeric keypad with practiced speed. He punched in a twelve-digit code, followed by his biometric thumbprint on the built-in scanner.

A sharp, high-pitched beep echoed from the safe. Instead of opening, the digital display flashed a harsh red warning: ACCESS DENIED. OVERRIDE CODE REQUIRED.

Julian frowned, tapping the screen again. The error message repeated, flashing rhythmically.

"That's impossible," Julian muttered under his breath, a bead of cold sweat forming at his hairline. "The encryption sequence is hardcoded to my personal biometric profile. Nobody else has administrative clearance."

Clara leaned in closer, reading the small text scrolling beneath the error prompt. Her face went pale. "Julian... look at the network connection status icon in the top corner."

Julian peered closely at the display. The small wireless indicator icon was pulsing rhythmically—not transmitting data outward, but receiving an incoming command stream from an external source within the building. Someone had already interfaced with the hotel’s internal routing server and hijacked the safe's control firmware.

"They didn't just want the data," Julian realized with sudden, chilling clarity. "They wanted to trap us up here, believing we were protecting the safe, while they bypassed the physical security entirely."

Before Clara could respond, a low, metallic scraping sound echoed from the heavy oak door behind them. Someone was tampering with the deadbolt from the outside using high-frequency sonic tools. The solid wood door began to vibrate visibly under the applied pressure.

"Julian," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper as she grabbed Lily’s hand and pulled the child behind her. "They're at the door."

There was no time left for digital countermeasures or corporate strategy. The corporate war had reached their doorstep, and the physical walls of the penthouse were about to give way.
