Chapter 13

Monday morning arrived with the crisp, relentless energy of a typical Chicago workday. The financial markets downtown opened with the usual frenetic pace, but for Julian Vance’s logistics firm, the atmosphere was one of profound reorganization rather than crisis. By noon, official statements had been released to the major financial publications detailing the thwarted cyber-attack by rival conglomerate Vanguard Logistics, positioning Julian’s enterprise as the victim of industrial aggression rather than compromised security.
Julian sat behind his expansive mahogany desk in his corporate office on the thirty-second floor, reviewing the preliminary federal indictment documents sent over by the Department of Justice. The name Marcus Vance appeared repeatedly across multiple felony counts, ensuring that the corporate raider would spend the foreseeable future behind federal prison bars rather than boardrooms.
The office door opened quietly, and Clara stepped inside carrying a tray with two fresh cups of espresso and a small plate of pastries. She wore a sharp charcoal pantsuit that contrasted sharply with the white lace wedding gown of two days prior, her demeanor radiating calm, commanding authority.
"Federal prosecutor just called," Clara announced, setting the tray down on the desk before leaning against the edge. "Vance’s legal team offered a full plea bargain in exchange for deferred sentencing on minor counts. The DA rejected it outright. They're throwing the book at him."
Julian leaned back in his leather executive chair, a genuine smile breaking across his structured face. He reached out, taking Clara’s hand and pulling her gently down onto his lap. "It seems our wedding day catastrophe turned into the best corporate audit we ever could have asked for. Security vulnerabilities exposed, rivals dismantled, and our records completely uncompromised."
Clara wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her forehead against his. "And most importantly, we survived."
"Not just survived," Julian corrected gently. "Expanded."
As if summoned by the conversation, the frosted glass door of the office swung open. Lily bounced into the room, wearing a neat navy blue school uniform dress with white collar trim, her wavy blonde hair tied back in a neat ponytail with a red ribbon. She clutched a brand-new box of colored crayons in her hands.
"Hey guys," Lily announced brightly, looking around the expansive office with wide, curious eyes. "The social worker lady said I can pick my own bedroom colors at your house. Can we paint mine bright red?"
Julian and Clara exchanged a knowing look, bursting into warm, genuine laughter that echoed off the glass walls of the high-rise office—a sound entirely free of fear, secrecy, or danger.

"Red it is," Julian agreed, lifting the little girl effortlessly onto his knee. "Provided you promise never to smash any more multi-tier wedding cakes."
Lily giggled, shaking her head. "Only if there's no spy machines hiding inside them."
