Chapter 4

Before Julian could formulate a plan to contact federal authorities, the heavy mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open. A single figure strode into the room with unhurried confidence. It was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal three-piece suit, his silver-streaked hair brushed back neatly. He held a leather briefcase in one hand, and as he raised his other hand to adjust his gold-rimmed glasses, a distinct scar shaped like a crescent moon caught the light of the crystal chandeliers.

Henderson, the hotel manager, backed away instinctively, knocking over a display stand filled with unused crystal champagne flutes. They shattered on the floor, but the newcomer ignored the noise entirely, his dark eyes locked straight onto Julian.

"Julian. Clara. My deepest congratulations on the nuptials," Marcus Vance said, his voice smooth, resonant, and entirely devoid of warmth. "It’s a tragedy about the dessert. I always said traditional bakeries lack structural integrity."

Clara stepped in front of Lily, her hands protectively resting on the child's shoulders. "You don't belong here, Marcus. Security!" she called out, but the two guards near the door remained paralyzed, staring at Vance with expressions of sheer bewilderment.

Vance offered a thin, polite smile. "Don't bother with the guards, my dear. They are currently managing a minor parking lot dispute outside that requires their complete attention. Besides, I am merely here to collect my property." He gestured casually toward the ruined wedding cake and the blinking device nestled within its sugary core.

Julian stepped forward, putting himself directly between Marcus Vance and his new bride. Despite the physical disadvantage of his tuxedo compared to Vance’s commanding presence, Julian’s posture radiated cold, controlled fury. "You crossed a line, Marcus. Using a public wedding—using children—to plant industrial spyware? That isn't corporate competition. That’s a federal penitentiary offense."

Marcus chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "Corporate espionage is a civil matter, Julian. A misdemeanor at worst, depending on the jurisdiction. Whereas the massive financial liabilities your logistics firm accumulated over the last fiscal quarter—those are rather more serious. Let us be entirely pragmatic. My investors require the encrypted keys to the global supply chain routing database currently sitting on your corporate server. Hand over the decryption protocol, and I ensure this little incident is quietly forgotten, allowing you and your lovely bride to finish your first dance in peace."

Clara’s voice cut through the quiet air like a razor blade. "And if we refuse?"

Marcus tilted his head, his gaze shifting briefly to little Lily, who stared back at him with unblinking defiance. "Then the transmission relay inside that cake activates on a wide-spectrum broadcast frequency. Every proprietary asset, every banking password, and every classified transport manifest belonging to your wealthy guests becomes public domain within thirty seconds. Your friends will lose millions. Your business partners will sue you into absolute destitution before the honeymoon flight even takes off. You will be ruined men before the week is out."

The silence in the room returned, thick and suffocating. Marcus Vance stood waiting, the epitome of corporate ruthlessness cloaked in tailored wool, holding the entire future of Julian and Clara’s lives in the palm of his hand.
