Chapter 12

The penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan was bathed in the pale, golden light of Sunday morning. Inside, the chaos of the previous night felt like a distant nightmare. A pot of dark roast coffee brewed quietly on the kitchen counter, filling the minimalist living space with a rich, comforting aroma.

Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapped in a heavy cashmere bathrobe, holding a steaming mug of coffee. Her blonde hair, washed free of hairspray and wedding styling, fell naturally around her shoulders. Below her, the lake shimmered under a clear autumn sky, boats dotting the horizon like whitecaps.

Julian walked up behind her quietly, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder. He wore a simple grey sweater and dark trousers, a far cry from the formal black tuxedo of the previous evening.

"You're up early," Julian murmured against her neck.

"Hard to sleep when you realize your entire corporate empire is about to explode at nine o'clock on a Sunday morning," Clara replied, her tone laced with dry irony, though her posture remained relaxed against his embrace.

Julian turned her around so she was facing him. He took her coffee mug and set it gently on the side table, taking both her hands in his. "It won't explode. I spent the last three hours using a secure burner phone to contact the federal prosecutor’s office downtown. I handed over every financial record, every intercepted communication log, and the physical serial numbers of the transmission device Vance used."

Clara searched his eyes, looking for any sign of hesitation or doubt. "And the federal agents?"

"They executed a search warrant on Vanguard Logistics’ downtown headquarters at sunrise," Julian said with a faint, satisfied smile. "Marcus Vance is currently answering questions regarding industrial espionage, wire fraud, and unauthorized interception of federal financial infrastructure. His board of directors has already initiated emergency dissociation proceedings."

Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally draining completely from her shoulders. "It's really over?"

"It’s over," Julian confirmed softly, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. "The threat is neutralized. Now we just have to figure out what comes next for us—and for Lily."

At the mention of the little girl, both of them turned their gaze toward the guest bedroom down the hall. The door stood ajar, revealing Lily curled up under a heavy duvet, sleeping soundly with her favorite red dress draped neatly over the bedside chair.

"She needs us, Julian," Clara said, her voice filled with fierce maternal conviction that surprised even her. "After everything that happened yesterday... she has no one else."

Julian nodded slowly, his expression softening as he looked down the hallway. "I know. Her parents were subcontractors for the catering firm—caught up in Vance’s orbit before they tried to back out last week. Social services is handling the formal placement, but given our involvement and her role in preventing the disaster... custody arbitration should be straightforward."

"Good," Clara said firmly. "Because she’s not going anywhere."
