Chapter 2

The immediate aftermath of Lily’s revelation brought a suffocating stillness to the grand ballroom. Waiters carrying trays of champagne flutes froze near the mahogany double doors, unsure whether to retreat or press forward. The bride, Clara, sank into a gilt-edged chair, her white lace gown pooling around her ankles like seafoam hitting a rocky shore. Her mind raced through the guest list, searching for anyone who could harbor such malicious intent against them.
Julian straightened his posture, adjusting his black bow tie with fingers that only slightly trembled. He stepped around the ruined wedding cake, his shiny patent leather shoes clicking softly against the polished parquet floor. He knelt beside Lily, bringing himself down to her eye level. The man was a successful logistics executive, accustomed to managing crises with calculated precision, but this variable was entirely unquantified.
"Lily, look at me," Julian said, his tone remarkably gentle, stripped of the polished authority he usually commanded in corporate boardrooms. "Tell me exactly what you saw. No details are too small."
Lily clutched the fabric of her red sleeveless dress, the bright color looking increasingly out of place amidst the panic. She swallowed hard, her wavy blonde hair tumbling over her shoulder as she nodded. "It was yesterday, during the rehearsal," she whispered, glancing nervously at the silent crowd of onlookers near the orchestra platform. "Everyone was in the courtyard eating miniature quiches. I dropped my favorite green crayon. It rolled under the service table right here."
Clara leaned forward, her tiara tilting slightly. "And what did you see under the table, sweetie?"
"A man with a heavy gold ring on his pinky finger," Lily explained, her small hands gesturing nervously. "He wasn't wearing a tuxedo like the other caterers. He wore a dark grey jumpsuit. He had a metal box with blinking red lights and long black wires. He pushed it right up through the bottom board of the cake stand before anyone else came back inside from the garden."
Julian exchanged a dark, knowing look with Clara. A dark grey jumpsuit. That description did not match any member of the catering staff employed by the hotel, nor did it fit any of their invited guests. It pointed toward an intentional, highly coordinated breach of security.
Panic began to ripple through the crowd as the realization set in that the device was not just a prank. Several prominent guests near the front rows quietly gathered their coats and handbags, whispering among themselves about calling security or law enforcement. The romantic illusion of the evening had completely shattered, replaced by the stark reality of a targeted threat.

Clara stood up, smoothing the front of her wedding gown. She placed a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder, feeling the child’s small frame trembling with residual adrenaline. "We need to clear the room," Clara said firmly, her voice carrying an edge of steel that surprised even Julian. "Nobody leaves the hotel until the authorities arrive."
Julian stood beside his bride, placing a steadying hand on the small of her back. Despite the disaster unfolding before them, a strange unity had formed between the newlyweds. They were no longer just a couple celebrating a milestone; they were allies in an unfolding mystery that threatened their lives, their reputations, and everything they had spent months building together.
