Chapter 8: The Price of a Surname
In late November, the outside world made a clumsy attempt to breach the perimeter.
A private process server in an unmarked sedan drove down the gravel lane in Sandwich, stepping onto the porch to deliver a formal demand letter from Arthur Hayes.
The letter was written on heavy, embossed law firm parchment:
* *Offer of Settlement:* The Hayes family offered Laura a $2 million cash payout and a trust fund for Leo on two non-negotiable conditions:
1. Leo’s legal surname would be registered exclusively as *Hayes-Sterling*.
2. Laura would execute a permanent non-disclosure agreement prohibiting any discussion of Derek’s financial activities, corporate accounts, or the hospital incident.
If she refused, the letter threatened to tie her up in state appellate litigation for the next decade until her legal fees bankrupted her.
Laura read the letter standing on the front porch in her wool sweater and jeans, while Leo napped safely in his stroller beside her.
She picked up a red pen from her pocket. Across the front page of the multi-million-dollar offer, in clear, bold, architectural lettering, Laura wrote:
**"MY SON'S INTEGRITY IS NOT FOR SALE. SEE YOU IN COURT."**
