Chapter 10: The Deposition of Truth

On January 15, the mandatory pre-trial evidentiary deposition took place at the Barnstable County Courthouse.

Derek Hayes sat across the conference table wearing a bespoke navy suit, flanked by two senior litigation partners. His father, Arthur, sat in the corner of the room, arms crossed, attempting to intimidate the proceedings with his presence.

Laura sat opposite them in a tailored charcoal wool dress, her hair pulled back into an elegant knot, holding herself with calm, unshakeable poise. Maya Chen sat beside her, opening three thick binders of forensic accounting reports.

"Mr. Hayes," Maya began, turning on the digital recording terminal. "Between March 2023 and September 2025, you withdrew $480,000 from the corporate operating account of Vance Statistical Design. Can you identify the business purpose of the $45,000 payment made to the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas on August 12th?"

Derek’s lawyer immediately objected. "This is irrelevant to the issue of parental fitness!"

"It is entirely relevant to the declaration of insolvency Mr. Hayes filed under oath last week to avoid statutory child support obligations," Maya replied with lethal precision.

Derek leaned forward, his face reddening. "That was entertainment for corporate clients!"

Maya turned to the next page. "And the $85,000 transferred to a private account registered under the name of Chloe Montgomery in New York?"

The room went dead silent.

Arthur Hayes stiffened in his chair, his eyes darting to his son in sudden, furious realization.

"You were funding a secondary domestic relationship using my client’s corporate consulting revenue," Maya stated, looking directly into Derek’s panicked eyes. "We have the bank signatures, the flight manifests, and the hotel folios. If this matter goes to open trial on Monday, every page of this audit will be entered into the public record."

Derek looked at his lawyers. Both attorneys were looking down at their legal pads, refusing to meet his gaze.

"What do you want, Laura?" Derek rasped, his arrogance completely collapsing into cornered panic.

Laura looked at the man she had once loved. She felt no hatred, no desire for vengeance, only a profound, liberating detachment.

"Sole legal custody," Laura answered clearly. "Sole physical custody. Supervised visitation only upon completion of a certified psychological evaluation and substance screening. Full release of all claims against my business. And you will never step foot in Sandwich."

Derek stared at her, his hands trembling as he reached for the pen.
