Chapter 11: The First Step on Sand

Spring returned to Cape Cod with an explosion of wild beach plum blossoms, salt-marsh greening, and warm, gentle winds off the ocean.
Leo was now ten months old—a strong, joyful boy with bright hazel eyes and an insatiable curiosity about the world around him.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in May, Laura and Caleb walked with Leo along the sandy shores of Town Neck Beach.
Caleb carried a small wooden toy boat he had carved from drift cedar, while Laura held Leo’s hands as his bare feet touched the warm, sun-baked sand for the first time.
Leo let out a high, ringing squeal of delight.
He let go of Laura’s fingers, wobbled on his sturdy little legs, and took three independent, triumphant steps forward toward the calm lapping water before tumbling safely into the soft sand.
Laura dropped to her knees, scooping him into her arms, kissing his sandy cheeks while both of them burst into pure, unrestrained laughter.
Caleb stood beside them, smiling with deep, quiet warmth, looking down at mother and son.
"He's got his mother's balance," Caleb said softly.

Laura looked up at him, her heart swelling with an emotion that was clean, safe, and true. She was no longer surviving; she was flourishing, anchored in a life that was rich with real love and honest connections.
