Chapter 6: The Golden Trap

By the second week of October, the legal machinery of the Hayes family launched its first coordinated offensive.
In the Barnstable County Family Court, Derek’s lead attorney—a ruthless matrimonial litigator named Richard Sterling—filed an emergency petition for temporary sole custody of Leo, alleging that Laura suffered from "severe postpartum psychiatric instability" and had "abducted the minor child from his marital residence."
Attached to the filing was a twenty-page declaration signed by Evelyn Hayes, claiming Laura was emotionally erratic, incapable of managing infant care, and financially insolvent.
Maya Chen arrived at the Sandwich cottage on Tuesday morning with a certified copy of the filings.
Laura was sitting on the sunroom daybed, nursing Leo while reviewing an epidemiological data report on her tablet. Her recovery was progressing smoothly; the surgical scar had healed into a clean, pale line, and the healthy coastal air had restored color to her cheeks.
"They're trying to use Evelyn's social standing to paint you as an unfit mother," Maya said, setting the papers on the side table.
Laura turned the pages calmly with one hand. She did not cry, nor did her heart race with panic.
"They don't have a single medical record to support this," Laura stated. "I have the full psychiatric discharge clearance from Mass General. I have Marcus Sterling’s clinical affidavit documenting Derek’s violent outburst in the ward. And I have the video from the hospital security cameras."
"We have something even better, Laura," Maya smiled with cold, professional satisfaction. "We have the state tax returns from the last three years. Derek declared an annual personal income of $42,000 to the IRS while charging $350,000 in personal expenses to your corporate accounts. The family court judge in Barnstable is Judge Eleanor Vance—a woman who spent twenty years prosecuting financial fraud and child neglect. When she sees these ledgers, Derek’s petition will be shredded before lunch."
Laura looked down at Leo, who had finished nursing and was gazing up at her with wide, clear, dark eyes.
"We don't just defend, Maya," Laura said quietly. "We file for full legal and physical custody, permanent child support based on his imputed earning capacity, and a formal freeze on all marital assets pending forensic accounting."
