Chapter 13: The Unbroken Court
On July 20, the Barnstable County Family Court issued its final, unappealable decree in *Hayes v. Vance*.
Judge Eleanor Vance signed the order without requiring a single minute of courtroom testimony:
* Laura was granted **Sole Legal and Sole Physical Custody** of Leo.
* Derek was granted zero unsupervised contact, with all parental rights conditioned on three years of verified behavioral compliance.
* The child’s legal name was permanently registered as **Leo Vance**.
* All corporate and intellectual property assets of Vance Statistical Design were declared Laura’s sole, unencumbered separate property.
As Maya and Laura walked down the historic granite steps of the courthouse into the summer sunshine, Maya handed Laura the certified, gold-sealed decree.
"It is finished, Laura," Maya said, wrapping her arm around her friend’s shoulder. "You are completely, legally, and permanently free."
Laura held the paper against her chest, looking up at the towering oaks surrounding the village green.
