Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Foyer

The stranger standing in the rainy doorway did not wear the standard black-and-white livery of the Vance estate staff. Instead, he wore a tailored charcoal suit that was soaked through at the shoulders, water dripping slowly onto the pristine welcome mat. In his gloved hands, he balanced a silver tray covered by a domed lid that matched the one Elena held against her chest. Julian peeked out from behind Elena’s apron, his tear-filled eyes wide with sudden curiosity. The guests in the ballroom leaned backward in unison, murmuring anxiously as a cold draft swept across the polished floor, extinguishing three candles on the nearest candelabra.
Richard stepped briskly past his wife, his stern expression masking a flicker of genuine irritation.
“Who gave you permission to enter the private wing of the estate? Security, remove this trespasser immediately!”
The stranger did not flinch, nor did he look at Richard. His gaze remained fixed entirely upon the silver tray in Elena’s hands.
“The security gates outside were unlocked from the inside, Mr. Vance,” the stranger said, his voice deep, calm, and carrying an unsettling familiarity. “Just like they were seven years ago when the maternity ward records were quietly altered to protect the family name.”
Clara gasped, stumbling backward against a marble pillar, her silver gown rustling sharply in the dead silence.
“That’s a lie! Who sent you here? Is this some sort of sick extortion plot by your business rivals?”
Richard lunged forward, grabbing the stranger by the lapel of his wet suit, but the man merely smiled, lifting the dome on his own tray just an inch. Inside rested a single, old-fashioned golden pocket watch engraved with the Vance family crest, alongside a hospital birth certificate bearing a signature that Richard had not seen in nearly a decade.
“I didn’t come here to negotiate a buyout, Richard,” the man whispered, leaning in close enough for the damp tweed of his jacket to brush against the black lapel of the tuxedo. “I came to deliver what was truly served on the night Julian was born.”
Elena felt a sudden, icy shiver run down her spine. She looked down at the boy clinging to her waist, noticing for the first time a faint, pale scar behind Julian’s left ear—the exact shape of a crescent moon, hidden beneath his short light brown hair.
“What are you talking about?” Elena demanded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to remain strong for the child.
The stranger slowly withdrew a folded piece of heavy parchment from his inside pocket, letting it drop deliberately onto the floor at Richard’s feet.
“Ask your husband what happened to the real maid who walked out of this estate with a baby carriage twelve hours before Elena was hired,” the stranger said softly.
May you like
Richard released his grip on the man’s lapel, staring down at the parchment with eyes wide with horror, as the heavy front gates suddenly slammed shut with a thunderous echo.
