Chapter 11 - The Footsteps on the Stairs

The heavy, rhythmic thud of boots echoing up the grand staircase reverberated through the mansion, drowning out the distant wail of sirens outside the gates. Elena clutched Julian tightly to her chest, her black maid uniform rustling sharply as she sprinted down the dimly lit hallway toward the servants' service stairwell behind the pantry. Every muscle in her body ached with tension, but adrenaline kept her moving forward, her eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of interception.

“Mommy, where are we going?” Julian asked in a small, breathless whisper, his arms wrapped securely around her neck.

“We’re going to a safe place, darling, just hold on tight,” Elena replied, her voice remaining as calm as possible despite the chaos unfolding behind them.

She reached the heavy wooden door of the service stairwell, pushed it open with her shoulder, and plunged into the unlit concrete stairwell that led down toward the basement kitchens. The air down here was cool, smelling faintly of old stone, damp earth, and polished silver.

As she started descending the steps, a sudden flash of light cut through the gloom from the landing above.

“There they are! On the service stairs!” a sharp voice shouted from the top of the landing.

Elena didn’t look back. She took the steps two at a time, her leather-soled shoes finding purchase on the worn concrete treads. The footsteps behind her grew louder, heavier, accompanied by the clatter of radio static and heavy tactical gear. These weren’t Vance security guards; the uniforms she caught a brief glimpse of in the landing’s mirror were marked with the blue insignia of federal marshals.

She reached the bottom of the stairwell, pushing open the heavy metal fire door that led directly into the estate’s vast, industrial kitchen. The stainless-steel counters gleamed under the emergency backup lighting, casting long, silver reflections across the floor.

Elena hurried toward the back exit that led out to the delivery bay, but as she reached the heavy metal exit doors, the deadbolt clicked loudly into place from the outside.

She twisted the handle furiously, but it wouldn’t budge. Someone had locked it from the exterior.

“Looking for a way out, Elena?” a calm voice echoed from the dim corner near the walk-in refrigerator.

Elena spun around, her heart pounding against her ribs, as a figure stepped out from the shadows holding a third silver tray with a domed cover.
