Chapter 12 - The Cold Kitchen

The man standing near the walk-in refrigerator wore a crisp security uniform, but his cap was pulled low, shadowing the upper half of his face. In his gloved hands, he balanced a silver tray, the domed lid resting securely over its contents. The emergency lights flickered overhead, casting a cold, flickering amber glow across the stainless-steel prep tables that lined the vast kitchen.

Elena took a protective step backward, shielding Julian, who buried his face deeper into her shoulder.

“Who locked the exit?” Elena demanded, her voice echoing off the tile walls. “If you think you can trap us here with Richard’s people, you’re gravely mistaken.”

The security guard smiled faintly, his face catching the dim light. It was the same man who had been stationed at the front gates earlier that evening—the one who had let Marcus into the mansion through the security perimeter.

“Nobody is trapping you with Richard, Mrs. Miller,” the guard said smoothly, his voice calm and unhurried. “In fact, Richard is currently tied to a chair in the study downstairs, listening to federal agents read him his rights regarding seven counts of financial fraud and child identity falsification.”

Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. She stared at the guard, processing the staggering turn of events.

“Then why are the doors locked? Why are we down here?” Elena asked, her eyes narrowing with suspicion.

The guard stepped closer, setting the silver tray down gently onto the stainless-steel prep counter beside them. With a slow, deliberate movement, he lifted the domed lid.

Inside the tray sat a small, leather-bound journal with water-damaged pages, alongside a heavy iron key stamped with the number forty-four—the exact key to the old estate safe deposit box that held the original, unalterable adoption papers from the winter of 2018.

“Because the federal investigators aren’t just here for Richard, Elena,” the guard said, his tone turning serious. “They’re here to verify the identity of the person who walked out of the hospital with Julian on the night his mother vanished.”

Julian peeked out from behind Elena’s arm, staring at the leather journal on the tray.

“That’s mama’s book,” Julian whispered softly, his eyes wide with recognition. “I drew a bird on the inside cover.”

Elena felt the blood drain entirely from her face. She looked down at the journal, realizing with sudden, sickening dread that the secret she had guarded for four years was no longer hers to keep.

Before she could reach for the journal, heavy boots echoed down the concrete ramp leading from the delivery bay, and the steel exit door was suddenly blown open with a loud, metallic crash.
