Chapter 13 - The Breach at the Bay

The heavy steel exit door crashed open against the concrete wall, sending a shower of sparks flying from the damaged hinge. Three federal marshals in dark tactical gear poured into the industrial kitchen, their flashlights cutting sharp beams through the dim, flickering amber light.

“Federal agents! Nobody move!” the lead marshal shouted, his hand resting firmly on the holster of his sidearm as his eyes swept across the stainless-steel counters.

The security guard who had been holding the silver tray immediately raised his hands, stepping back into the shadows without a word of resistance. Elena stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, her black maid uniform contrasting sharply against the stark metal surroundings, while she held Julian tightly against her chest.

“Step away from the table, ma’am, and keep your hands where we can see them,” the lead marshal ordered, taking a cautious step forward.

Elena didn’t move. She looked down at the leather journal resting on the silver tray, then back up at the federal badge glinting on the marshal’s tactical vest.

“I’m not a suspect,” Elena said, her voice steady and clear, cutting through the hum of the kitchen refrigerators. “I’m the one who protected this boy when his own family tried to erase him from the registry.”

The marshal paused, lowering his flashlight slightly as he recognized her face from the briefing notes distributed by the district attorney’s office earlier that evening.

“Mrs. Elena Miller?” the marshal asked, his tone softening slightly. “We have an active warrant to secure the contents of the west wing, and we need you and the boy to come with us to the command post outside.”

Julian whimpered, burying his face deeper into Elena’s neck.

“Are we going away, mommy?” the boy asked, his voice breaking with tears.

“No, sweetheart, we’re finally going home,” Elena whispered, pressing a soft kiss to his short, light brown hair.

As the marshals stepped forward to escort them toward the open delivery bay doors, a sudden commotion echoed from the upper service stairwell. Heavy footsteps came pounding down the concrete steps, followed by the frantic shouting of a familiar, desperate voice.

“Elena! Don’t let them take him!” Richard screamed, bursting into the kitchen with his tuxedo completely torn, his hands bare of any restraints.

Richard lunged forward toward the prep counter, his eyes wide with wild panic, ignoring the federal agents entirely as he reached desperately for his son.

“He’s my blood! You can’t take my son!” Richard roared, his fingers brushing against the edge of the silver tray just as the lead marshal drew his sidearm.
