Chapter 14 - The Final Stand in the Kitchen

The sharp click of the marshal’s sidearm clearing its holster echoed off the tile walls like a gunshot.
“Freeze, Mr. Vance! Do not take another step or you will be subdued!” the lead marshal commanded, his weapon leveled directly at Richard’s chest.
Richard stopped dead in his tracks, his breathing ragged and shallow, his hands hovering inches above the silver tray where the leather journal rested. The fight had completely drained out of him, leaving behind only the desperate, hollow shell of a man whose empire had crumbled in a single night.
“You don’t understand,” Richard whispered, his voice cracking as he looked past the federal agent straight at Julian, who was hiding his face against Elena’s shoulder. “I built this estate for him. Every share, every contract, every dollar was meant to secure his future.”
“You didn’t build a future, Richard. You built a cage,” Elena said coldly, turning her back on him completely. She looked at the federal marshal, nodding once. “We’re ready to leave.”
The marshal motioned to his two subordinates, who stepped forward to secure Richard’s wrists with heavy zip-ties, escorting the broken man toward the shattered exit doors without encountering any further resistance.
As Richard was led out into the cool, rain-washed night air, he cast one final, lingering look back at the silver tray resting on the stainless-steel prep counter.
“The boy... the boy doesn't even know his real name,” Richard muttered softly just before he disappeared into the mist outside.
Elena stood in the center of the quiet kitchen, the tension slowly bleeding out of her muscles. She adjusted her grip on Julian, feeling the steady, natural rhythm of the boy’s breathing against her collarbone.
The security guard who had left the tray stepped out from the shadows near the walk-in refrigerator, tipping his cap respectfully toward Elena before walking silently out through the delivery bay doors, leaving them completely alone in the calm after the storm.
Elena reached down with one hand, picked up the leather-bound journal from the silver tray, and tucked it securely beneath her arm.
“Come on, Julian,” Elena said softly, turning toward the open doorway where the morning sun was just beginning to break through the gray clouds on the horizon.

She took her first step out of the mansion’s service entrance, but as she crossed the threshold, the heavy iron gate at the end of the driveway suddenly swung shut with a loud, metallic slam, locking itself from the outside.
