Chapter 9 - The Confession Tape

The flashing red and blue lights of the federal cruisers washed over the weathered pine cabin, painting the clearing in an erratic, strobe-like rhythm. Agent Miller stepped out of the lead vehicle, his heavy boots crunching over the gravel as he approached the porch where Adrian held Leo pinned against the wooden pillar.
Leo was sobbing openly now, his designer polo shirt torn at the shoulder, dignity entirely stripped away by the harsh reality of handcuffs clicking tightly around his wrists.
"Captain Vance," Agent Miller said, flashing a brief, approving nod toward Adrian before turning his sharp gaze onto the sobbing teenager. "Looks like you caught our second cooperating witness of the evening."
"He didn't catch me! I was just looking for my phone!" Leo shrieked hysterically, thrashing against the federal agent who guided him toward the back of the cruiser. "You can't arrest me! I'm a minor! Well, legally nineteen, but my trust fund covers my immunity!"
Agent Miller didn't even bother responding. He shoved Leo into the back seat of the cruiser, slamming the heavy door shut to muffle the teenager's frantic screaming. The agent then walked over to Adrian, pulling a small, black digital voice recorder from his trench coat pocket.
"We tapped the estate's landlines right after you transmitted the flash drive," Agent Miller said, his voice lowering so Clara couldn't easily overhear from inside the sedan. "Your mother made a very interesting phone call to her Swiss bank manager approximately twelve minutes ago, trying to wire the remaining liquidation funds to an unmonitored Cayman account."
Adrian crossed his arms over his chest, his face remaining entirely expressionless. "Did she sign the authorization using Dad's forged biometric override?"
"She did," Agent Miller confirmed, tapping the recorder. "Which automatically triggered a felony wire fraud charge under federal counter-terrorism and financial corruption statutes. She's looking at twenty years minimum. No bail, no appeals, and zero access to her legal team."
Adrian closed his eyes for a brief second, letting out a long, slow breath that seemed to shed a decade of pent-up trauma from his broad shoulders. He turned his head, looking through the windshield of the sedan at Clara. She was staring back at him, her hands resting calmly in her lap, the bruised skin on her face softened by the warm glow of the dashboard.
"And what about the house?" Adrian asked quietly. "The estate?"
"Eminent domain seizure under the federal racketeering act," Agent Miller replied smoothly. "The entire property, the art collection, the offshore holdings—everything goes into a restitution fund for the veteran charities your mother defrauded over the past decade." The agent paused, sliding the recorder back into his coat. "You and your wife are legally cleared to reclaim any personal belongings left behind. Though I imagine you won't want to spend another minute in that mausoleum."
Adrian nodded once. "Thank you, Agent."
"Don't thank me yet, Captain. Your mother is currently barricaded in the master suite with a shotgun and a bottle of seventy-year-old scotch, threatening to burn the entire east wing down unless she speaks to you directly."
Adrian's jaw tightened instantly. "She's bluffing. She loves her possessions far more than she loves her own life."
"Maybe," Agent Miller said, opening the door of his cruiser. "But the local fire department is already staged at the gates just in case. I suggest you and your wife head down to the county motel in town. We'll handle the extraction."
Adrian walked back to the sedan, pulling open the passenger door and offering his hand to Clara. She took it without hesitation, letting him help her out of the car and into the cool night air. The sirens had stopped wailing, leaving only the quiet rustle of the pine trees overhead.
"What happens now?" Clara asked softly, her fingers gently lacing through Adrian's.
"Now," Adrian said, wrapping his arm securely around her waist and leading her toward his own vehicle, "we go back for the last thing your mother stole from you."
Clara looked up at him, confusion flickering in her bruised eyes. "What could possibly be left?"
Adrian opened the passenger door of the sedan, letting her settle into the heated seat before leaning in close.
"Your peace of mind," he whispered, kissing her forehead tenderly.

As they drove away from the cabin, neither of them noticed the small, blinking red light of a miniature tracking device glued magnetically to the underside of the sedan's rear bumper, silently transmitting their exact GPS coordinates back to a burner phone sitting on the floor of the estate's master bedroom.
