Chapter 5 - The Flash Drive Bluff

The amber lamplight glinted off the sleek, black casing of the encrypted flash drive pinched between Adrian's fingers. The room fell into a suffocating silence so absolute that the hum of the bedside clock sounded like a ticking bomb.
Eleanor’s eyes darted from Adrian’s unblinking gaze down to the small piece of plastic. For a fraction of a second, a muscle twitched near her left eye—the only physical tell betraying the deep, paralyzing panic threatening to shatter her composed facade. She knew what sat on those servers; her late husband had spent his final months transferring every fraudulent offshore asset away from her direct control and into a secure vault accessible only by Adrian's military clearance code.
"You're bluffing," Eleanor said, though her voice lacked its previous razor-sharp edge. "That drive was locked inside the wall safe in the study. The combination is biometric. You couldn't have accessed it without my fingerprint."
Adrian did not smile, but a cold, hard satisfaction settled into the corners of his mouth. "Dad changed the protocol six months before he passed, Mom. He knew your hands would be the first ones tied when the auditors started looking for the missing millions from the veterans' charity fund."
Leo lowered his smartphone slightly, the blue glow reflecting off his widened eyes as he looked between his mother and his older brother. "Wait, what foundation money? Mom, what is he talking about?"
"Shut up, Leo!" Eleanor snapped, her aristocratic poise finally cracking as she took a desperate step forward. "He is lying to manipulate you! That drive is empty! It's a decoy!"
Adrian stepped back, pulling Clara closer to his side with his left arm while keeping the flash drive raised in his right hand. "Then let's test that theory together, Mom. We can walk down to the front gates right now, hand this directly to the federal marshal waiting in the cruiser, and let him verify the encryption keys on the spot."
The two private security guards standing in the hallway exchanged uneasy glances. They were high-paid muscle hired to intimidate rebellious spouses and handle unruly teenagers, not federal whistleblowers or accessories to grand-scale corporate embezzlement. One of them shifted his weight, subtly taking a half-step backward away from the open doorway.
Clara clutched the fabric of Adrian's sleeve, feeling the rigid tension in his forearm. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but for the first time since she had married into this cursed family, a spark of genuine hope pierced through the terror.
"You wouldn't dare destroy our family name," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with genuine fury as she reached out a shaking hand. "Your father built this estate from the ground up. You are throwing away generations of legacy for a girl who doesn't even know which fork to use at a state dinner."
"Dad built a home," Adrian replied coldly, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "You built a prison. And visiting hours are permanently canceled."
Without another word, Adrian hoisted the canvas duffel bag over his shoulder with his free hand, keeping his arm securely locked around Clara's waist. He pushed past the hesitating security guards, who instinctively parted to let the decorated Marine through.
Leo raised his phone again, his hand shaking visibly as he tried to frame the shot. "You're making a huge mistake, Adrian! You're cutting off your own inheritance!"
Adrian stopped at the top of the grand staircase, turning his head just enough to look back at his younger brother with profound pity.
"Keep the phone rolling, Leo," Adrian said quietly. "You're going to need the footage for your own defense attorney by tomorrow morning."
They descended the stairs side by side, leaving Eleanor standing alone in the dim hallway, her chest heaving as she stared at the empty space where her control had finally evaporated.

As they reached the heavy oak front doors, the brass lock turned with a loud, mechanical click from the outside.
